Hi, I'm a junior and I live with my mom and her boyfriend. My parents are divorced, but I don't have a "father" on my birth certificate. My mom didn't file taxes (and probably won't) because she doesn't have an income, and we live off of her boyfriend's income (note: they aren't married). How would I fill out the FAFSA, and how will this be factored into my EFC? I'm pretty confused about how to go about filling it out.

If you live with your mom, you will use her information on the FAFSA. If she didn’t have to file taxes, she will need to complete a non-filers form. If her income is really zero, you will likely get verified. The colleges will want to know how you pay basic living expenses with no income. Be prepared to provide documentation to support this.

Unless there was an immaculate conception, you have a father. If you are looking at schools that require information from your non-custodial parent, you will have to provide it regardless of what your birth certificate states or you will have to start the process for trying to obtain a non-custodial waiver.

No, not necessarily true.

For example - an anonymous sperm donor and artificial insemination, the father field on the birth certificate would be blank. (*)

(Unless there is a husband and he agrees to be listed as the father.)

In Washington DC, a father must be listed on the certificate. I wonder what they do in these cases.

I assume “father unknown” must be an option.

I assume the statement was meant to be read, “you got half of your genes from some guy,” not “it’s impossible to have a birth certificate with no listed father.”

In the event of an anonymous sperm donor, I would guess that mom will have her documentation attesting to this as part of the non custodial waiver paperwork.

Remember that your parents are first in line when it comes to paying for your education

Just to clear things up, I do know who my father is. However, he left before I was born and has since passed away.

Then you will just use your mom’s income and assets. Because of her non-existent income you will most likely be flagged for verification. The school will wNt to know how your day to day needs ate being met.
