How do i get my parents to buy me a $40,000 car?

After giving my H a synopsis of the thread, he advised asking your parents for a good pair of shoes, if you feel daring…ask for a bike…

I begin to see why CA is on the brink of financial collapse.

Yes. Calif really needs to examine its aid programs.

I don’t think this kid is a ■■■■■. I think he’s one of the misguided kids out there who feel entitled to luxuries on someone else’s dime. Right now, he’s expecting them from his parents; next he’ll be expecting them from the taxpayers.

He mentions using financial aid money to pay for the car loans…this IS using money from taxpayers…if he GETS financial aid in excess of his costs of attending college. My understanding was that NEED BASED aid could not be awarded in excess of the actual Cost of Attendance as computed by the college.

This is getting out of hand; I came here seeking advice on a simple question. I didn’t come here to be ridiculed by people, who i thought were suppose to be mature. Shame on you!

Are you saying no to the hooptie?

I am a California taxpayer. If you succeed in your plan to receive financial aid – presumably because your parents can’t afford to pay your college expenses – when in fact there are hundreds of dollars a month in disposable income available to pay for a $40,000 vehicle, my funds will be subsidizing this folly. So not only do I feel entitled to ridicule a wee, tiny bit; I feel entitled to flat out condemn. The fact that you would appear to lack any insight whatsoever into the ethical ramifications of what you’re trying to pull of is worrisome.

So let me join the band of shocked parents in hoping that this is a joke.

^^^^^^^^me too!

Posted by blkbox on another thread regarding housing. Is this HIS/HER anticipated housing cost?

ok, sybbie. Pleading ignorance. What’s a hooptie? I recommended a pimpmobile upthread. Is this similar?

Yes, Jym.

Op should buy a hooptie for about 1k, trick it out (pimp it out) and live Big Willie style.

And on a more understanding note, on the assumption that the OP is not an econ or business major and is confused about how money works: OK OP, assume 70K is your parents’ gross income.

1.) Figure out how much they have to pay in federal and state taxes.

2.) Subtract that amount from 70K and divide by 12. This will give you their monthly income.

3.) Figure out how much they need to put aside each month for retirement so they can live decently in their old age. Are they funding a 401K? How do they plan to retire?

4.) Figure out how much they spend on health insurance and how much they pay beyond that for their medical and dental expenses.

5.) Figure out their monthly mortgage or rent payment, in addition to the insurance on their property.

6.) Figure out their car payments and the monthly cost of insuring their cars. What are their transportation cost including gasoline and repairing and maintaining their cars?

7.) Figure out the cost of food per month.

8.) Figure out the annual cost of clothing your whole family. Divide by twelve.

9.) Figure out how much your family is going to have to pay for your tuition, housing expenses, books, and recreation when you’re at college after financial aid.

10.) Figure out your parents’ expenses for recreation, vacations, helping elderly relatives, charitable contributions, religious contributions.

11.) Figure out the cost of educating and paying other expenses (piano lessons? summer camp? saving for college?) for your other siblings if any.

12.) Figure out the actual cost of financing a $40,000 car and getting insurance on it for a 20 year old driver. (Hint: It is not $350 a month.) Where is this money going to come from?

LOL!! Shame on US?? You think you should get a $40K car either on the back of your parents, who don’t earn anywhere near enough to finance it, or on the back of the CA taxpayers who would supposedly be providing you need-based financial aid and YOU are saying shame on US??? Tooooo funny!!!

Stevie Wonder saw this train quickly derailing

This is so funny.

A youngster posts on a parent’s blog and expects to get advice.
He gets ridiculed.
Doesn’t like the comments.
Thread as of 4:45 PDT has 146 posts and over 4500 views.
I pulled a funny on his thread.

I’m still trying to figure out why OP wanted to post here.
Why we let him into the door.
And how the heck can I make a wonderful thread with lots of replies and views.

You think I can good advice, if I query the College Cafe about getting DS a GF? :)

The OP must be getting a real kick out of all this silliness. Very entertaining ■■■■■ thread.

Oh, and in another thread the OP said they thought that political science is harder than engineering. Ya can’t make this stuff up!

Hey, sikorsky, what happened to your “spot on” post???

Shame on us?

Shame on YOU if you somehow managed to guilt your parents into buying such a car for you. While you would be driving around and preening for attention, your family would be getting by on peanut butter and jelly, while sweating the next month’s rent/mortgage payment.

Could you post his stat’s please? ;)

This will be my last post in this thread. Let me just reinforce it once more, shame on all of you! I honestly feel embarrass for your children, if they knew the way you were all acting in this thread. This is such a pity. Hopefully one day you’ll all realize how ridiculous you all sounded in this thread and i will get an apology from each and every one of you. You all should be very ashamed!

^
No, I know for a fact my D would be disgusted yet laughing at the absurdness of your OP. I’m pretty sure you will look back on this thread many years from now and even laugh at yourself.
