How Do I Get the School to Give More Money?

I plan to transfer to one of two schools. School A has given me an excellent package and school B has given me a not so excellent package (I would need to pay double what I would at School A). However, I favor school B much more than school A. Would it be unfair to go to school B and show them school A's offer as a way for them to give me more money? How would you try to get school B to give you more money? Any successful approaches?

You can certainly try…but don’t hold your breath. Some schools will reevaluate your financial aid based on what other schools have given you and others will not discuss this at all. In most cases, this really is only an option for peer schools…schools of similar demographics. In other words, you could try two different Ivies, but not an Ivy vs. a public university.

Keep in mind that if these schools use the Profile and this is institutional money, they probably are using different formulas to compute your aid. That is well within their right. Different schools take different financial items into consideration when determining aid.

DD applied to two peer schools. School A gave her a decent award but reduced it significantly. School B gave her a so so award. School A flatly refused to discuss financial aid awards. Whatever they gave you was IT. No discussion. School B was willing to discuss the award and ended up adding in Work Study and a Perkins Loan (still not sure how that happened…but it did).

So…go ahead and try…but don’t be too disappointed if your School B won’t bend a bit to match School A.

I see in your posts that the two schools are Vandy and Georgetown. If Vanderbilt gave you the higher award, I’m not sure you will be able to get G’town to budge. My understanding from others, is that G’town will only reconsider financial aid awards IF you can show that there has been a change in your financial situation since you filed you received your award (think job loss, significant loss of income, medical expenses or the like). If nothing has changed, it’s not likely they will change either.

If you got the higher award from G’town, you might be able to convince Vandy to give you more.
