How do i make myself stand out?!

Hi i'm in fifth applying to Deerfield Academy, Exeter, Andover, and Groton for ninth grade - 12th grade. I play sports and excel at school and currently helping out in the soup kitchen and play guitar. But i need more things to do to make me stand out can you give me a few things i can try to do to make myself stand out ( and i mean really stand out in my applications)! Thank you!

Sorry, are you in 5th grade?

yes, fifth graders can apply for entrance inr prep schools

I thought you meant fifth form (7th grade/ JBS). This is out of my realm…

Part 1: The schools you list are very competitive, and you will be competing with very strong eight graders (or 7th graders for Groton). Why do you want to apply so soon, if I am understanding correctly that you will be applying next fall as a 6th grader? Add some less competitive but still excellent schools (search for the “hidden gems thread” in prep school admissions.

Part 2: You are really on to something about standing out. Think about what makes you different from other applicants. Is it your home location? A passionate interest like math or history? Take up an unusual instrument (oboe or bassoon are good). Start a volunteer club in your community, like collecting coats or books or used cell phones for a charity that accepts them, and see how many you can get together with your friends to give to the charity. If you like sports, see if you can get involved in lacrosse, water polo, field hockey or crew (sports few middle schoolers take that prep schools need). For academics, look for opportunities for enrichment, maybe like online courses (EPGY, CTY or the like), clubs like MathCounts, or science olympiad.

Hi,
I think that making yourself stand out isn’t something you can control. Even though you may think that you have the most unique ec ever (such as an underwater tuba player ;)), maybe they already have 6. I would try to just do what you love. Show that you have determination and commitment to things you enjoy. That will help you look great, even though others may have a resume 10 pages long, I think it’s better just doing a few things really well. The community service is great as a person and applicant!

Another thing I would say as an applicant for 2013-2014 year, is really be yourself! In my interviews I literally laughed all the time, and I got into both my schools! Although good grades and test scores help, don’t lose sight of actually being yourself. I think I stood out as more than just numbers from that. Really try to let your personality shine, either during your interview or in your essays!

I really hope I helped! Good luck when you do apply!

Interested in seeing what schools you got into and where you decided to go, it’s amazing to have interest in a school for three years!
