Hi i'm in fifth applying to Deerfield Academy, Exeter, Andover, and Groton for ninth grade - 12th grade. I play sports and excel at school and currently helping out in the soup kitchen and play guitar. But i need more things to do to make me stand out can you give me a few things i can try to do to make myself stand out ( and i mean really stand out in my applications)! Thank you!

Does that mean you’re in fifth grade, or something else?

yes fifth graders can apply for highschool grades boarding schools

Just enjoy middle school and find a few things you are passionate about and really commit yourself to them. I’m pretty sure AOs can see through surface-level resume padding.

Try to make sure that you are well known by your teachers so when it comes time for them to write recommendations they can write a very personal reference. You don’t need lots of ec activities, but you should do things that you enjoy. When you can speak or write passionately about what you do, the schools will remember you.

Please just enjoy middle school and worry about this in seventh grade-at the very most. You don’t want to pad your applications with activities you aren’t passionate about. Just pursue your interests. Don’t be afraid to try something new, and don’t place a lot of importance on this one event. Most of all, enjoy yourself!

Chill out! You’re in fifth grade. Wait until seventh to begin to worry about applying. Don’t do anything just for resume value. Also don’t think anything you do now will be the same then. You still have three years until eighth grade. It’s just boarding school, don’t worry about it for the next three years.

Be yourself, read a lot :)
