How do I send additional essays after being deferred?

I want to send two more essays and a research paper. Is there space on the February Notes and Updates Form, or should I fax/mail/email them?

Why are you sending more information?

Did they request it?

The admissions offices are inundated with applications. They typically don’t like additional forms that weren’t requested because it’s additional time and they are on a time schedule.

They didn’t request it.

MITChris can comment better on today’s mood in the admission’s office on this.

But a few years back a woman I know worked in the MIT admission’s office. She said when someone got deferred, the office only asked for one page of new information. It was annoying when applicants re-hashed material they already had in the application or flooded them with material.

Adcoms work very long hours during admissions season. Be careful about giving them more work to do, especially if they didn’t ask for it. I’ll defer to MITChris’ call if this sentiment is still true today.

Additional accomplishments are the best things to send. Not additional essays.

When the February Updates & Notes form comes out, take a look at that and see what you can add there. I wouldn’t submit additional essays though, because that’s going to be unwanted. They don’t want to have to read more essays that they didn’t assign. Research papers you can still submit as a research supplement through MIT’s Slideroom.
