For USC, on Slideroom it says "Only portfolios of applicants to one of the art majors will be reviewed. Please do not submit a portfolio on this site unless the first or second choice major you selected on the Common App corresponds to either the BA or BFA Art major."

I want to major in Computer Science and not any of the arts, but I want my portfolio to be considered as part of my application. Should I just continue to submit it and ignore their instructions? Or is there another way for non-art major students to submit it? Likewise for UC schools, they only want first choice art majors to submit.

How could I submit mine without "ignoring" their instructions? Even if I do submit, do they even look at it at all? Will they be annoyed I submitted mine?

Why would a college admit you if you cannot follow directions?

If you are NOT applying as an art major, they DO NOT want you to submit an “art portfolio.” That seems pretty clear to me. On the other hand, if you are planning to major in computer science, you should consider submitting a website with your CS projects – some of which might contain artistic elements.

FWIW: When you submit something extra with your application – be it an art portfolio, music supplement, research project or computer science project – whatever you submit is going to be compared to all other students who have submitted similar material. Consequently, your portfolio, supplement or website needs to be of the highest caliber, otherwise your work will be overshadowed by superior presentations. If you do not have such examples to submit, it might just be better for you to write about your passion for a subject and to NOT submit anything extra.
