im not a big fan of english but im trying to change that. i never really payed attention in high school so i forgot. im trying to go to a good black colege. help please?

Okay, just think of a topic (this is the hard part) that is/was somehow significant to you; common but kind of cliche ideas include influential person (teacher, relative, celebrity, etc), extracurriculars, intellectual interests, particular class you enjoyed, etc. You don’t have to be good at english to write a great college app essay; in fact, colleges often dislike when applicants try to use overly formal diction and sound pedantic (although you probably shouldn’t have major grammatical errors and a 1st grade vocabulary). Whatever you write about, make sure you connect the essay back to YOU. That’s the key component of a good college essay. Also, make sure it’s not too long or too short (500-700 words is a good range). Good luck!

the thing is,
i forgot how to do an essay. :(

Umm (???), Put words in paragraphs and stack them, and it becomes an essay. Tell a story with those words.

What exactly do you mean?

So in school they teach you to make these “five paragraph” essays. Where you have an intro, then three body paragraphs, each of which has a topic sentence which gives the subject of the paragraph, which is then further explained later on, and then finally a conclusion. The reason they teach you this is to push you towards beginning to organize your ideas.

This is a horribly boring way of writing, and I wouldn’t suggest having your college essay look like that. What you do want is some sort of introduction to introduce the story you are writing. You do want each of your paragraphs have a point. You do want some resolution at the end of the piece. You want your essay to have all these parts, but at the same time, you don’t want it to feel mechanical.

It will take some work on your part, but if you do it right you should have something to be proud of by the end of the process.

how much time does a good college essay takes to complete?

^ Depends really. if you are genuinely passionate about your topic you will be done with it in no time and probably have to cut chunks of it.

I have came up with some tips on just the prewriting that can be found @ http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-essays/965853-college-application-prewriting.html. I’ll have some more tips coming up.

It sounds like you are looking for someone else to tell you what to write and write it for you. If you didn’t care at all about learning in high school, why do you want to go to college? If you do care, take a class at a community college in writing and English. Or go to a library and find someone willing to teach you writing. Elementary schools begin to teach writing very early. Most people can communicate their thoughts on paper well before they get into high school. What you hint at is there is a problem in the eduction system which allows you to complete high school and be unable to write an essay. At least you admit you didn’t care about it back then.
