How do Independent Studies look to adcoms?

I may have to take one for Yearbook next year (as I'm co-Editor in Chief and don't have room for the actual designated class). Most of the designing can be done online anyway, so our adviser is only having us come to class two or three times per week.

My question is, does an "Independent Study" look bad/slacker-ish/illegitimate to college adcoms? I've never had one before, or an Academic Lab, and I tend to not take super-easy electives. Thanks in advance!

i personally don’t know… so sign me up for this thead. i’m curious.

prolly looks good 'cause you’re challenging yourself

I know a girl who does two independent studies (out of five major courses). She got into Duke, Johns Hopkins, WashU, and Northwestern.

You could always describe what you do during that time in the ‘extra information’ area of the Common App, or have your counselor mention it in his letter. I think as long as you’re being productive (self-studying, editing the yearbook, etc), it’ll be viewed as a positive.

Okay, good. And my counselor is a woman.
