How do online classes work?

Do online classes at community colleges start and end at a specific time or can you start at any time and finish at your own pace? I plan on taking two of my classes online because I’m going to take six classes for the semester and I figured that if online classes allow you to begin and end at any time, these classes won’t interfere with the rest my schedule.

Also if you’ve taken one, how was your experience?

They usually do start and end on specific dates, but you can work ahead during the course. Usually there are deadlines for assignments online but you can work ahead and turn them in early. Online classes are great for when you have a busy/weird class schedule. I would usually just wait until the weekends to do work for my online classes, while focusing on my other classes during the week.

There can be a wide variation. The class that I teach online has weekly modules, and you can only work on that week’s module. So you can do that module anytime during that week, but you cannot work ahead. My daughter, however, took an online class that in which she was able to work ahead. I would think that the more discussion-based classes would not allow you to work ahead too much since everyone needs to be participating at the same time on the same material.
