How do scholarships work?

I am not at all sure how scholarships work. Do colleges just consider your grades.
I am a B student will I be able to get any sort of scholarship or are they reserved for people with high A's.

You need to look at each school for their policies and requirements for scholarships.

Merit scholarships are based on grades and SAT or ACT scores, and each school that offers them will have their own standards.

Some schools, like the one my daughter attends, has a scholarship for people who have done a lot of community service and plan to continue that while in college. Some schools have scholarships for specific religions, children of alumni, and other categories.

Need based scholarships are determined by family income and assests. Those vary greatly from school to school. Some schools meet what they consider to by your need, but the majority of schools do not - you may qualify for some assistance, but that may or may not be enough to meet your need as determined by your parents.

Here is our son’s story - he is a B - B+ student with a SAT score of 1940 combined. However, he took a bunch of AP courses in High School. He is a senior now and will be in College studying Engineering this Fall. He has 4 offers, and two colleges (ranked in the mid 50s and State :)) have offered him Scholarship - one for about 32K over 4 years and the second about 22K over 4 years. He is a Robotics club fan and is really involved in that in his school. We unfortunately do no qualify for any Federal/State aid as we are way above the cut off.
Net, I believe, the colleges look at you as a prospective student and - if you can impress them you can get scholarship.
Best of luck - don’t short sell yourself to the colleges, make sure you highlight what you are good at - that’s what our son did.

Tiranga- Thanks for sharing your specifics… can you tell us which engineering schools you are talking about? I have a sophomore child just starting her college search and engineering could be on the horizon for her:)

Livn - Offers from Rutgers, Drexel, UMass Amherst and SUNY Stony Brook. Scholarships from UMass and StonyBrook. Best of luck to your daughter!

His SAT score is really close
