How do scholarships work?

Do I, as a student, have to search for certain scholarships that apply to me and notify the college in the application?
or,
Will colleges notice that I fall under that category and offer me money automatically?
I'm talking about all sorts of scholarships- merit, sports, volunteer, and even weird ones, like being a midget or whatever (I'm not a midget, but I can't think of any of those weird ones at the moment:)

It all depends. If it is merit based paid by the college - most are automatic but some have a special application. All colleges websites have a “financial aid and scholarship” page that should lay it out. Athletic scholarships - ypu have to be a recruited athlete. Talk to your club or high school coach for guidance. Other speciality scholarships that are not paid by the university - you have to find and apply to. Your school counselor can help with finding the right ones for you.

Your school counselor should NOT be expected to search all of YOUR college websites for scholarship opportunities. That is YOUR job. Think about it…if your counselor has 50 students who each apply to ten schools, should that counselor really be looking for 500 scholarship opportunities? Not in my school.

The best scholarships are awarded by the colleges based on the strength of your application…mostly SAT or ACT scores, and GPA. Some scholarships have a separate application process. You need to look on the college websites and find what you think you are eligible for and see if there is a separate application, plus the deadlines for the applications for the scholarships as well as your admissions application. Some of these are before the start of December.

Your school counselor should have information about local scholarships. These are usually smaller dollar amounts and are one time awards. They are awarded by local groups to students in your community.

If you are willing to post your GPA and SAT or ACT scores here, you might get some suggestions. Also, look above at the threads for automatic scholarships (there is a link to current info on that thread), and the thread for competitive merit scholarships.

Thanks! I am totally willing to post my GPA and test scores. So, I got a 31 on the ACT. My GPA is a 4.86 (weighted) and a 3.99 (unweighted). I’m applying to Clemson, Duke, NC State, GA Tech, and maybe Wake Forest.

Where are you instate?

Any chance you could get that ACT to 32…or is your SAT CR/Math above 1400? If so, you could get guaranteed merit aid at U Alabama.

Yes, my friend just got a 3/4 scholarship there with my scores, and she told me that she was one point away from getting a full ride. I’m in NC. Any in-state scholarships for me?

@lexiyak: I believe the politically correct term is ‘little people’.

Each school’s website will have information on the scholarships they offer.
