So i was just quite inquisitive on how top colleges like HYP, Stanford, MIT verify your EC. Its not like i would lie on my application, just being curious on how they would certify all the Extracurriculars someone did throughout their high school. And if they have some procedures then how could they substantiate trivial EC like member of a club. And is the procedure same for International students also?
They can’t. Obviously if it’s something big like an international award or a published paper, they can google it. But think about it, they have thousands of students per admissions officer, they can’t google every single student.
They do not and people seriously embellish their activities…
If a certain EC is what tips you into the accepted pile it would be easily verified by a Google search.
I wouldn’t assume that “serious” embellishment is widespread (it certainly wasn’t allowed in my household). In any event, I agree with TomSrOfBoston that many of the extracurricular accomplishments that matter are verifiable.
The UCs verify 10% of their accepted pool, and from what I’ve heard they require an adult (teacher/mentor/boss) to sign off that yes the student did this, yes she was president, yes it was 20 hours a week.
At my children’s school their transcript that is sent by the counselor to their colleges, it lists not just grades but extracurriculars. So if it’s a school related extra curricular it would be on there. If it’s not part of school (Girl Scouts, travel soccer team, volunteer work with church…) then that would be something that someone could more embellish if they chose to. But let’s say you claim to be an Eagle Scout or Gold Award Girl Scout, that’s something that’s easily verifiable by a college.
