I found out that the median score on each section is supposed to be 500, and that the media SAT is 1500.
But I don’t get how they get the median so low. I go to a normal public school and NO ONE I know scored that low. Everyone at CC seems to score insanely high.
Could Collegeboard just say that the mean or median is 500 just to make us feel better? It sure sounds suspicious.

Actually, I heard it's a bit higher, closer to a 1600. If you don't know anyone who scored around there in your "normal high school," believe me, you don't go to a "normal high school."

In my high school, the highest score on the SAT's was in the 1700's. I actually know people who would be very happy with 500's on each section of the SAT.

I know people who scored from 800-2100. I know nobody who scored higher. Somebody in my grade scored an 800 (overall!) and someone else scored a 2100 (highest score in the grade). The second highest score was a 2050, followed by one 1900 and a few (4) 1800s.

Didn't the SAT start out as a US military IQ test? Think about it... what's the average IQ? 100. What's the (old) average SAT score? 1000. What's a "gifted" IQ? 130. Where do the "good" scores start? 1300.

Just a thought. Obviously, the SAT sucks as any sort of IQ test, if only because you can prep for it. But still. Interesting.

CC is the creme de la creme of high school kids, have you ever read what are my chances? always HYPSM haha, eveyrone here is psychotic and thats how you wound up here to help fix that lol

Yes, 500 is the average score for each of the sections.

The SAT started out as an entrance test only to be taken by certain prep school students who were applying to the Ivies. As more people began taking it, the average score dropped over the years, and it was recentered in 1996. Anyone who took the test before 1996 can add about 100 points to their score. It is more complicated than that, but it works out to be about 100 points for people in the middle.

In the Washington DC area of which I am familiar, there are a few high schools where the average SAT score is 1450/1600. There are also about a half dozen high schools in the suburbs where the average SAT is in the low 700/1600. There are more high schools in the downtown area where the average SAT is 700/1600.

In terms of the affirmative action debate, would you be more impressed with someone with a 1520 where the average is 1450, or someone with a 1280 where the average is 700?

don't forget, CB's largest market is Calif which requires the SAT for all 4 yr college admissions, including the Cal State system; thus, kids with a 2.0 gpa are taking the SAT I.

Dude, most people do score around 1000(old score). 1000 is actually considered to be a good score for the average college bound person. I had the second highest score in my class, which was only a 1370, so it really depends on what high school you go to.
