I posted this in the transfer section but didn't get a response so I thought I would ask here.

I was diagnosed with a chronic illness in 2010 and had a 2.5 gpa for that year. Since the disease went into remission, I have averaged a 3.85 gpa. Counting 2009 my GPA is around a 3.4 now but could have been much higher. Do universities view chronic illnesses as a liability? I feel like it would hurt my chances. At the same time will the upward gpa trend post illness help me or sort of "offset" my bad gpa in the adcoms eyes? I plan on transferring. Apps open Nov 1. Any help is appreciated thank you. :)

Not a liability, they can be understanding. But, adcoms’ bottom line question can be: can you manage the workload and challenges at that college? If you feel you can, great, try to show that. You want them confident about how you deal with this, have focus, participate in activities, etc. Best of luck.

One thing that might help is explaining how you’ve learned to deal with your illness while at college. Some applications have a section where you can talk about circumstances such as this that you would like them to take into account when considering your application. Good luck!
