Hey, I was waitlisted at BC and they said I would have to respond to another college and they would have their final decesion no later than july 1st if i chose to be on the waitlist....I probably won't do this but how does the process work?

Schools accept many more kids than will actually decide to attend. If for some reason. they underestimated and end up with fewer students than they need, they will make offers off the waitlist. It will likely depend on major and other things.

My son was waitlisted at 2 schools. Was not taken off the list (ie- no letter later offering admittance.) Realistically, count on going to a school you were accepted to. If you should get notification over the summer you can decide at that time if you want to attend.

Good point to make… ALWAYS expect that you won’t get in off of the waitlist, and that you’ll get rejected after you sign up for it. That way, you don’t get too enamored or expecting of said school.

alright i see… i wasn’t planning on going to the school anyway so I won’t get my hopes up too high

While Veracity and crazed have good points, if you were waitlisted at a very expensive private school, your chances may be higher than in the past because of the bad economy and such. Still don’t get your hopes to high though. And each school is different, some rank the waitlistees, while others reevaluate all of them if they need to go to the WL. And some schools go to the WL to fill in certain gaps if, for instance, they need more engineering students over arts and sciences students, in which case applying to one of the less common schools/majors would be more beneficial. Depends on the school though.
