How do you dress when you’re mostly at home or retired?

I’m just curious and NOT judging at all - when people say they are wearing “sweatpants” what does that mean??? Like the drawstring elastic waste heavier pants with or without elastic at the ankle??? (clearly I don’t own sweatpants, only leggings - I like things fitted and not loose on my legs)

They are not fleeced, but all cotton. Both have elastic waist, one with a draw string. One is straight leg, I got from JJill. They have shrunk a little on the length, though. I actually think you might have found them for me a few years back, maybe. They sort of look like knit pants/sweats.

The other I got at Steinmart and have a flared leg at the bottom. The height of fashion.

I’m with @HouseChatte. I’ve been out of the workforce since 1997. Winter gear is nice- enough jeans and a cashmere sweater with fuzzy socks. Summer gear is cropped pants or a skirt with a nice tee, or a summer dress. I would never, ever wear leggings or athleisure wear all day as I would immediately gain weight (due to lack of waistband giving me subtle feedback on overeating). Even taking online barre classes now during stay-at-home, I change out of those clothes as soon as class is over.

Sweatpants are now called “joggers” and are more trim and stylish than the old sweats. The Lululemon Align ones are a wonderful fabric (like the Align leggings) and really cute. Wide enough waisteband that a slim tshirt looks good tucked in. My Vuori joggers are a thin more cottony fabric but a pretty red color and also cute with something tucked in- if I had any need to be “cute”, which I don’t right now.

I seriously just ordered new leggings online as Im fat and have worn holes in all old leggings.

Retired for a long time (ahead of the times dealing with old surgeons as a woman MD…). Never had time or money plus always changed into scrubs for the day at the hospital so never needed a dressy wardrobe. Wearing a mask also.

Fast forward. Society has become more casual. Now in Tampa where it’s been too hot this winter so I kept my usual attire- T-shirt (v neck colors) and elastic waist shorts (lost my waistline years ago, sigh). Add a bra for going to the store. Sandals except real shoes for the gym/exercise. Now I use cushy sliders in the house since my physician said I should (but on tile, not carpet). Always went barefoot growing up and slippers for winter warmth at home. Quit my powder, lipstick, maybe mascara (bothered my eyes often), blush routine a long time ago. When cold will add a sweater or such at home and elastic waist sweatpants. Due to my height and size it is hard to find long enough pants- don’t want exposed ankles if I’m trying to keep warm. Up north I would use long sleeved T’s under a sweater or fleece cardigan style. btw- I never had ligament support- saggy even as a teen- so no argument for how wearing a bra all of the time would have made any difference.

I know many ladies who forgo the bra at home- and have for decades. Awhile ago I decided that workmen I see briefly aren’t worth putting on a bra for.

Playing the old lady card for dressy occasions. I did buy cosmetics- lipstick, powder, blush, eye shadow and mascara- for a medical school reunion last summer. Have not worn heels of any height for decades now- never did more than 1 1/2" ever.

Talked to a local friend over 70 who has worn makeup since she was 14. She still does her routine daily regardless of whether she is leaving the house- “maintenance”. She has no better reason when I ask why.

I wonder if it matters what you looked like as a young adult. Those of us who were never considered great looking (not ugly either) may have aged better and it didn’t matter how much we tried, we were never going to compete regardless of the clothes or makeup. Also never could afford anything- and then no time and wore scrubs et al.

I have a photo of four neighbor girls (age range two to four, 2 sets of sisters) sitting outside in the WI summer. Three chose dresses (late 1950’s), one a shirt and shorts. Three were shy- avoided the camera, one looked directly into it. I’m the odd girl out. Guess I was never into fashion, girly clothes (or shy).

I’ll bite. I already worked at home before the pandemic and so this is not really new for me, other than I haven’t left my apartment hardly at all and did it a bit more than this before the restrictions. I live alone. So, nobody really sees me, unless I have a video conference which is once in a while, not regularly. When home by myself, I tend to wear leggings or yoga pants and a top of some sort (sometimes nice ones, but overall on the comfy side). I never wear shoes inside the home. When home alone, I don’t put on a bra and I don’t put on make up. If I lived with someone, I might have! And I have been more slovenly during the pandemic given I have rarely left my place or seen a soul.

That said, I like nice clothes. My attire when I leave the house is “nice casual”…jeans, pants, skirt with nice top or a casual dress. Right now, I feel like I have acquired a nice wardrobe but am barely using it since I haven’t been going out. And I haven’t been using any of my shoes. When I go out, I wear make up. If I attend something, like nice dinner out, a show, a concert, etc., I dress up even a bit more.

Yes, I know “joggers”! Nice option! Not sure if that was what some were referring to “sweatpants” or if they were talking the old style Hanes style sweatpants or what you might find at the college bookstore with a logo on it!!

What I wear at home must meet two standards. It must be comfortable, and it must be easy care.

When I said sweatpants, I meant knit pants…but really comfy roomy ones!

At home? I have a bunch of comfy jeans in a variety of colors. I really like chenille sweaters in the cold weather. I have a bunch of 3/4 length sleeve shirts for when it’s warmer. If i get cold, I put on a fleece vest.

Indoor shoes are LLBean fleece lined slippers.

If I go out, I slip on boots when it’s cold and sandals if it’s hot.

In the summer, I wear little summer t shirt dresses. Comfy and loose fitting but look nice for just about everything.

@MomofWildChild, I just put a request in with the husband for some Align Capri joggers, just in case he wants to buy me a little something. It’s your fault

@wis75 , I could have written the current wardrobe part of your post, except for the part about height. My problem is the opposite; I’m short and shrinking. I often buy pants and pajamas labeled crops or capris because they usually fit me like regular length pants. (Imagine Randy Newman’s “Short People” playing in your head now.)

My sweatpants are not trim, in fashion, or stylish. Think older male nursing home resident sweats. I can’t stand being cold, and I live in a snowy, windy area, so I only wear sweats with ankle cuffs. I also wear socks 24/7 for the same reason.

Much to my chagrin, but obviously not enough to put forth the effort, I have only two types of clothes–professional pant suits (I don’t do dresses) and the above-described sweats. Meeting with clients at regular or home office is professional dress. Otherwise it’s the sweats  I work hard to train local clients it’s by appointment only.

I have no hips and no waist. Jeans are hurtful. I do wear jeans when going to town for errands. Only have 2 neighbors, in differing directions, and too far to see people.

My uniform is jeans, t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. As the day gets warmer the sweatshirt comes off.

I admire people wearing jeans at home.

I’m in leggings almost all the time. Leggings, tank and either a longer hoodie or if I’m feeling fancy, a casual cardigan.

I have lighter weight leggings and thicker leggings. Even have a collection of fleece lined leggings but those are for walking outside mostly.

I bought a couple of joggers but I have to say that I usually just stick with leggings.

But if I go out, I usually put a pair of jeans on. Or not…

I’m all fancy today because I took a field trip to the store. I’m wearing actual pants. And a bra.

No bras for me during stay at home, and also have given up panties. Decided a slip was adequate under my long dresses… probably an overshare.

I actually put on makeup today, for the first time I can remember in weeks. I put on nicer clothes than normal during this time too. An actual button down shirt and pants that are stretchy but not leggings.
