How do you dress when you’re mostly at home or retired?

Be been wearing leggings, exercise capris or these https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=566571012&cid=1005439&pcid=1005439&vid=1&grid=pds_56_82_1&cpos=59&cexp=1488&cid=CategoryIDs%3D1005439&ctype=Listing&cpid=res20042315536024830553692#pdp-page-content I bought these last spring and I love how lightweight they are. I’ve worn them on planes, hiking and just about everywhere.
My D loves her Lululemon align joggers. They might be my next purchase.
I’ve been going out once a week since the stay home order- that is the one day a week I put on jeans and a bit of makeup.
We are now having a heat wave and I’ve pulled out shorts. I love casual dresses but haven’t felt the urge to put one on to just stay home.

At least a couple of people mentioned hoodies. Do you wear them when you’re going to work? Out on errands or to lunch kinds of places? I used to have a fair number of hoodies, including some cashmere ones I loved, but at some point I started feeling like I might be too old for that style.
I also like casual dresses, but don’t tend to wear them when I’m at home.

I will never be caught bra-less! I joke that I will be buried in my very expensive Marie Jo bras.

Wearing a bra may depend on your size. Some need support but for some of us it just doesn’t matter. There are many stories to be told on that topic (such as the incredulous clerk in fitting who couldn’t believe a twenty something woman wore a 38 AA plus extender?- they didn’t make a 40 AAA)… Oh, and tall not fat back in the day.

Refreshing to see clean but casual dressing for others.

Another topic. Hygiene. I presume showers and teeth brushing still occurs. But what’s the rush? Once retired and son off to college there was no need to hurry with those- they can be done after a leisurely breakfast.

Agree that folks who are say “more endowed” may prefer some comfortable support while others are fine without or perhaps a camisole of “shelf bra” that is built in to some garments.

Some of the men prefer not to shave every day if not required. The stubble can be attractive—or not, depending on tastes.

If I’m out of my PJs I usually have a bra on. Lately it’s been a sports bra more often than a regular bra.
I brush my teeth every morning right after coffee, but I have started waiting until after I finish exercising to take a shower most days. I do take a shower every day.
I have been a wash my face twice a day (or more) gal since forever. Now, if I am not wearing makeup I might not wash it in the morning. I’ve heard that as we age it’s really better not to wash our faces as much, but I don’t know that it’s really true.
My husband has gone days without shaving since being home, but he does not grow much of a beard. After 4 days of not shaving for him, it looks like 1 day of not shaving for my sons. He takes a shower each morning at about 8, and then he runs about 11 and takes another shower after that. A bit much for me, but not worth filing a complaint
I assume we are spending less on extra water than we are saving on gas these days.

I have to wear a bra now because S is home. I’m finding that I’m staying in my pajamas longer and longer in the mornings. I used to exercise in the mornings and get ready for the day. Now I think why? It’s 9:30 where I am and I’m still on the couch surfing the net and reading my book.

I’m getting sick of my black knit pants I wear everyday. Good weather is almost here, so don’t want to spend money on something else. Looking forward to wearing shorts and knit casual dresses.

To me there is a top (sweater, tunic, whatever) with a hood and then there is a “hoodie” - which I equate to a sweatshirt with a hood.

I have several tops with a hood - it’s just a style I like, not really sure why since the hood has no real purpose.

I will wear a hoodie for walks in the neighborhood and usually always pack one when going on a trip - even a weekend trip - because I think they fill a niche of being comfortable and useful if it gets cold while outside or if it starts to sprinkle. But I avoid giant oversized hoodies.

Part of the reason I started this thread was to help me figure out what I “should” be buying, since retirement is on my near horizon. (Likely within a year or so).

I’ve stopped buying as many “professional” clothes as I used to, and now I’m getting tops that can be used for work but can also be more casual, for example. I wouldn’t wear leggings or tights to work, but I will likely need more of them for retirement. If I buy new pants, they are not the “high quality” I would have purchased years ago, but ones that will last a year or so. I’ve given up purchasing blazers or jackets for work, unless there’s just something I really like and want.

After how chilly it’s been this spring, I realize I need more casual/athleisure kinds of shirts with long sleeves to wear around the house. I won’t wear actual sweatshirts, because I get too warm in them (even though we keep our heat at below 65), but some of the ones that I think would be called athleisure seem to be the perfect weight.

Cashmere sweater sets or just a tee kind of shirt with a cashmere cardigan or “long” sweater over it have been part of my work “uniform” for winter, when not wearing a jacket, but I’m not planning on buying any more - they seem too dressy for home to me, and as I packed up my winter sweaters, I realized I have LOTS of them.

I think I’ve figured my “house” uniform during retirement will be leggings/yoga pants/joggers, and a top, so I can get some light exercise in during the day and not have to change, and they are just easy to wear/comfy. When I go out for every day things, I will wear jeans (blue or other color) and casual tops, but not likely the same tops I’d wear at home or to the gym. I need to get a better selection of casual but not athleisure tops. I can still wear the sweaters I have when out and about too.

ETA - I will need to get some new shoes too. I’m thinking some Rothys are in my future, and I’m not sure what else. Frye flats have worked for me previously, but I’ve ordered a couple of pairs lately and they haven’t fit well. I have several pairs of booties for when I leave the house and it’s chilly, and sandals/other comfy summer shoes, but I do need some more flats, for both work and retirement.

Does anyone else think it’s odd that most posts by women mention whether or not they are wearing a bra? If we were meeting in person, and discussing our outfits, would we feel compelled to inform the listeners whether or not we are braless?

Not criticizing or anything, I just find it interesting…

I think it would be mentioned in my friend group if this was the topic. It would be a side note like it is here.

The last time anything along these lines came up was with a friend texting me right after her breast reduction surgery while still feeling the anesthetic: “I have the boobs of a nineteen-year-old!!!”

So yeah, it would probably come up.

unusual times, unusual conversations

eta… bookmarked Mary Jo bras, and will wear one if I order

If we were to meet in person, I would not have to mention it. It would be perfectly obvious I’m not wearing a bra! Haha!

Guy here. Lol.

I’ve had lots of video conferences. Almost everyone is in jeans, golf shirt or oxford with a three quarter zip vest or long sleeved version. It the dress down Friday uniform except the jeans replacing khakis or linen pants in summer.

I’ve always worked at home so, I’m wearing what I always did. Jean or slightly nicer but comfortable pants, (like NYDJ in colors) a plain long sleeve t-shirt, a sweater most of the time. I am wearing my workout clothes more since I sometimes put them on in the morning and don’t get around to working out till later in the day. I have a Zoom art class twice a week and try not to look too messy for that!

I don’t own sweatpants, rarely wear sweatshirts anymore except a sweatshirt cardigan. I’ve never understood leggings. My ankles get cold. I always wear socks. I’ve looked at Athleisure things others have posted, and they don’t look comfortable to me! Not tempted by joggers either.

I do usually wear a bra. I’m not that well endowed, but my bras are comfortable and I have a friend who gave up wearing bras and I decided that was not a good look.

Guys, I bumped up the WFH outfit game today. After exercising this morning, I showered and put on a nice tee, a skort and a fishnet type sweater over the tee. A pair of not for fitness sneakers. I felt the desire to NOT have leggings or anything on my legs.

I feel like I’m going to a ball!!!

I don’t work, and one challenge has been staying up later and later at night. Which has resulted in my sleeping in later and later. I’m trying to rectify that and get up by at least 8:00 with a goal of starting to exercise no later than 9:30. I lounge in pajamas until then. But, there have been days where I don’t start exercising until 11:30 if I have slept in later. It’s easy for me to fritter away time online. I also hate to exercise, so I procrastinate.

After exercising, I shower. Typically, I put on capris or shorts and a bummy t-shirt - the type that I exercise in. In that case, I will usually wear that t-shirt the next day FOR my exercising before tossing it in the laundry. I always wear a bra, but I rarely put on makeup these days. I do always dry and style my hair after showering.

The only two exceptions for make-up during our present times are if I a doing a virtual happy hour (which I’ve only done a couple of times) or if I am videoing/recording some of my guitar playing that is going to go up on my YouTube channel. It’s funny because when I do put on makeup, I almost feel like I look like a clown because I am so unused to seeing myself in it! ?

BEFORE the stay-at-home, I would dress nicer and wear makeup if I were going somewhere where I was seeing/hanging out with friends (lunch, shopping, trivia, out to dinner, beach sunset) - which happened more days than not. We are in Florida, so I prefer dresses/skorts.

I work in a place where the described “dress down Friday uniform” would probably be a bit dressier than normal for men in the office (in every office that I have been in, women tend to be a little dressier than men). Of course, now it is mainly working from home. Video conferences indicate that most men dress about the same (at least above the waist/chest) as they do when they come into the office (women sometimes less so).

Have worked at home for decades. My “uniform” is a long-sleeved t-shirt, jeans, jackets/sweaters/hoodies/flannel shirts when it is cool. (I’m always cold, so sometimes I wear several layers.) I only use leggings as long underwear under my jeans in the winter. Just don’t feel right all day in PJs. (Maybe it reminds me of being sick?) Not comfortable bra-less–not a good look with adult sons in the house. I get dressed quickly as soon as I get up. I like having a an efficient routine so I don’t have to think about it or waste time. No makeup. Messy bun. Glasses. Add running shoes when I leave the house. If I want to be a little dressier, I will wear leather shoes with my jeans. (I do dress up–dresses/skirts, hose, heels-- for church or special occasions.) Our exercise is usually a brisk 2-4 mile walk after dinner. Always shower each night before bed.
