how do you feel about allusions in essays?

i was planning on using an allusion in my essay (referring to the cask of amontillado), but the more and more i think about it the worse i feel because of my unsureness of how well-read the Adcoms are... has anyone on this thread used an allusion in an essay? if so to what? however, If anyone feels it is a bad idea please tell me (list reasons) vise-versa... every opinion is valued.

P.S Just for reference purposes, I wasn't doing just a tiny little allusion i was going to do something huge that really reflected my writing style, that is why I'm inquiring here thanks.

You can gently enlighten/remind the reader by saying "...Poe's great story about...".

However, I would think very carefully about this concept. The essay should imho reveal you in your own words/concepts/framework, rather than by relying too heavily on someone else's words/concepts/framework.

I read it, but even if the adcom has read it before, I doubt it would be recently. In another 20 years I probably won't remember it because I read it in ninth grade.

I personally wouldn't use it- I almost used one my EC essay and ending up cutting it to be safe.

I'd stay away from allusions. I agree with ADad in that an essay should be as your's as possible and I agree with brillar that, even if they had read it, most probably won't recall it. I read it only 4 years ago, and I barely recall the basics.
