How do you find the smaller companies to apply to?

It's in the title I suppose: Does any one have any tips on how to find smaller companies that I, or most people, wouldn't have heard of, to apply for jobs with? I don't want to stick to the big names.

Thanks.

What career field?

Searching on Linkedin is one resource I would suggest. You should set a profile and make it publicly visible (so potential employers can see), if you haven’t already.

Some college career services departments have databases available that allow you to download companies by industry and size. CareerSearch is the most commoon of these I think, and OneSource is probably second. Check with your career services department to see if they provide access to one of these databases.

These are usually available to alumni as well as students if they have them available.
