I was suggested that applying for internships from the small firms would be a good idea because I have no experiences and have mediocre gpa. Where can I find more info about finding these small firms?

I'm engineering major, currently a junior.

Its early enough in the school year that you need to start doing the following:
- go to your career center and start applying to every and any company
- go to the career fairs that your school has specifically for engineers
- research all engineering companies in your particular field, find out if they take interns for the summer and start applying
- start net working by talking to your college advisor and see if he/she knows of any company, talk to your professors, sign up for a mentor in your school,(if the your school has that) and make connections

The bottom line is that there are lots of internships out there but only the kids working hard to find them will actually get them. You have to be willing to role up your sleeves and get dirty.

Once you get an interview, I would recommend that you read up on 'how to interview" so you can be ready for the interview. You don’t want to get so far as to get the intervew and then blow it because your were ready for the types of questions they were gonna ask.

Good luck
