How do you get awards?

How do people get awards/prizes/medals/whatever/etc./yeah?

I want to go to a good college but I don't really have any awards.
Tips?

use the internet to find out-of-school competitions.
join the most sucessful competing clubs at your school.
suck up to your teachers so they’ll nominate you for stuff.

hmmm thanks.
What’s the deal with scoring high on the PSAT?
Also, anyone know anything about Academic Decathlon?

My friend is in Academic Decathalon (or something like it). Your school has to be involved I think.

Idk.

At my school, getting awards means having straight A’s, being a junior/senior, and teachers liking you. =/

If you score high enough on the PSAT you can be National Merit. Finalist, semi-Finalist, or Commended. if you are black or Hispanic, there are other PSAT awards. The black one is National Achievement, and I don’t know what the Hispanic one is.

How high do you have to score?

It depends on your state and if you go to a boarding school or not. In California, the last two years, the cutoff has been 218 and 217 (the sum of your 3 scores). Generally, between 200 and that cutoff or so gets you recognition, but no chance to progress further. If you are a semifinalist, you will likely become a finalist as long as your SATs and grades aren’t horrid, and then you can write and essay and submit your transcript and so forth to be considered for a scholarship.

I did Academic Decathlon. It’s basically a studying competition, but since I didn’t study much my scores were mediocre (6700 in 11th and 6500 in 12th). You can get medals in individual categories for that (I got a bronze in Econ).

Also, when I say mediocre I mean by LAUSD standards. LAUSD is the most competitive district in the nation by far. I believe 3 or National Champions have come from the district this decade - Southern California schools have won 7 consecutive Nat. Championships. Norcal is a lot less competitive and you could get some medals without an obsessive amount of effort.

You can enter an academic decathlon, science bowl, science fair or creative writing competition, but be sure to do something you like.

By the way, ThisCouldBeHeaven what did you guys place at state?

We were ~30th in the city. (We only would’ve beaten like 5 states at Nationals)

Usually you EXCELL at something and you COMPETE. The definition of champion comes in handy:

cham·pi·on (chmp-n)
n.

 1. One that wins first place or first prize in a competition.
 2. One that is clearly superior or has the attributes of a winner: a champion at teaching.
 3. An ardent defender or supporter of a cause or another person: a champion of the homeless.
 4. One who fights; a warrior.

You do any of these things and you’ll definitely earn some awards.
