Is this amount, which is entitled, "Scholarships and grants" supposed to be included in the student's income on the student's income tax form? - and is therefore taxable?

In my case, the amount that is there is a need based scholarship or grant from the school.

The only taxable amounts for scholarships are those which are NOT used for tuition/fees/books. Scholarships used for room/board/expenses are considered taxable.

I don’t have the form in front of me, but you should see the amounts of scholarships and grants and the amount of deductible expenses. You can either use the form #s every year and report the difference, or you can do your own tracking and report your own net numbers.

The difference is that sometimes the school will bill in Dec for tuition but you don’t pay it until spring, so you can shift the #s to when they were paid rather than when they were billed- your choice

i see on the 1098-t form , issued by the college,

box 2 which is captioned, ‘amounts billed for qualified tuituin and related expenses’

22,196

box 5 says ‘scholarships or grants’ and has 6437 in it.

I believe that the 6437 was a need based grant from the college that reduced the tuition’s ‘sticker price’ .

roderick, I sent you a pm.
