I'm an incomming freshman and right now i'm sorting through all my items. I plan on bringing some sensitive information like a copy of a birth cirtificate, social security card, etc. But I ran into a problem. How can I keep these items secured? Should I really bring a safe to college? I'm not exactly a fan of lugging around my 100 lbs safe.

There’s really no reason you would need a copy of your birth certificate, so I would leave that at home. Your social security card might be useful if you plan on getting a job or something, and I would just file it away in the bottom of a desk drawer or something like that. The chances of someone going through everything in your room looking for something to steal are very small.

Don’t bring it unless and until you need it. When it’s requested, have your parents fax it to the office that needs it. Memorize your SSN…you’ll get asked for it more than once right after you move in.

If you absolutely have to bring them, just keep them in a desk drawer and make sure your door is locked when you leave. Most college thieves don’t think to look at documents, so keep them on the bottom of a stack of papers or in a folder and you should be fine.
