how do you know if your high school is good?

I attend a private prepatorary high school. Lately it seems that there is more drama then learning. I am worried that I am not getting a good education.
reasons why I feel this way
1) Most of the kids slack off and can be destructive especially in Geometrey
2) Teachers keep leaving us to go on sabaticals and we are stuck with the only sub who has keep us behind in math and chemistry.
3)Around only ten AP courses and two honors classes
4) kids that should be kicked out from ex setting the chemistry lab on fire on purpose are still there the next day.
5) Also, it is not very selective so everyone gets in ir seems
These are my concerns. Also is there a way to look up your school reputation in the public and college eye?

I go to a public school that looks good to colleges, because doesn't just hand out A's. A 4.0 at my school (which, by the way, i don't have heehee) is more impressive than at most schools in my state. Is yours an easy A school? Are you taking a tough course load?

Now of course the college admissions factor and the learning factor are entirely seperate. Even if colleges love the school, they may not being seeing the reality and you may be getting cheated out of a good HS education. It's up to you and your family what you do or don't do about that.

Check its profile and list of college acceptances, as well as its ranking system (does it have high grade inflation?)

If it's name is Thomas Jefferson, and it's in Virginia, then it's probably pretty good.

I don't think there is high grade inflation-most people I know are getting straights C's but that could be because they are a little lazy.
From Last year, A few people at my school went to pretty good schools.
1 person weht to Harvard
1 person went to Cambridge in the U.K
2 at Sarah Lawrence
1 at northwestern-my school is affiliated with them and we can audit courses there when we are juniors
I can't remember the rest-I'll find out and post tomorrow.

3)Around only ten AP courses and two honors classes

^Well that might not be so bad, depending on your class size.

There are 300 students in my class and only 6 AP's are offered.

Anyway, from the above posts and more:
1. You may be getting cheated out of a good HS education. It's up to you and your family what you do or don't do about that.
2. Check its profile* and list of college acceptances, as well as its ranking system (does it have high grade inflation?)

*The profile should include the average SAT scores, AP scores, what percentage of students go on to attend 4-year colleges (and 2-year schools), graduation/drop-out rates, and more.

Some state universities send officials to metro cities to evaluate the rigor of local high schools and then give those schools a rating. I know that this is a case with the state of Washington and I know that CA has API scores to show the performance of high school students. For instance, schools in the Fremont Union High School District in Silicon Valley have very high API scores and a few of them, such as Monta Vista High School, are feeders to the Ivy schools (or more appropriately, send a large number of students to top universities).

Wiki: Monta Vista High School With an outstanding API score of 924 points out of 1000, Monta Vista is regarded as one of the top schools in California./quote

Your school might be "ranked" by news magazines based on the number of APs it offers and how well your schools perform on them. This is a poor assessment though of ranking high schools - there are multiple threads floating around CC that discuss high school rankings based on AP scores.

Colleges get a feel for your school from the profile, how many students are normally admitted from that school, and then, eventually enroll. So you may find that over a span of time, similar number students will be admitted from a high school.

there is no ranking in my school
In my grade there are 48 students. The upper school has around 180 students. My school is JK-12 grade school, and in total has around 400 students. I posted earliar where some of the students went to last year and that my school is affilatited with Northwestern University
Where can I find the profile-I know this may be a stupid question.
Also, my school is apart of the Independent school league if that at all helps, probably not,

Ask the counselor-they should have one readily at hand.

My graduating class has 325, and we only have 4 AP classes:

Calculus AP (but no calc 2 class, so the AP test is a stretch)
English AP
Chemistry II AP
Biology II AP

Also, with half (heh) of our AP classes in one subject area (science), this gives students less of a chance to take all of them if they wish...gotta leave room for required classes.

Thomas Jefferson....
I (Public high schooler in VA) asked my AP Cal teacher about TJ's stats.
It said. 300+take BC and 300+ have 5 and 1x have 4 and a few get a 3, and no one get 1-2.
That is crazy. If the AP Cal BC takers are freshmen, that is really amazing.

um, i go 2 a pretty good school, where

students r very motivated and its cool 2 b smart
-um, it says that ur high school's good when u look up ur town on wikipedia.org? lol

wen a large # of students each year get into an ivy league (cornell <3 us)

wen not only do they have a large variety of AP and honor courses, there are also other academic opportunities

the students are a large factor of it, in my opinion. the kids here are expected 2 do well, and want 2 do well, and actually do well.

im pretty sure stats at exeter are the same...kinda sad for the school i go to. how many people at tj take clac bc in their freshie year?

Hah, nobody from my school goes to Ivy League...or at least nobody in the past few years. A few people go to Vanderbilt usually (I will be next year), and someone this year is going to NYU...but that's about as high as we get.

A good amount (I think almost half) of my school's seniors get into UVA. Is that considered good?
