I want to apply to the U of C and I know that good essays and GPA are crucial there. I'm a sophomore and I have been thinking about various topics to write about for my essay. How do I know if I have an excellent idea and how do I choose one? No matter what I write about, I know that I am going to tie in science concepts to the paper. Is this alright?

After writing mine for about a month and reading many many book on the topic, I learned the following:
Topic doesnt matter much. Every topic has been used once before. It's how your perosnality and characteristics show. (Also passion)
And its your sophomore year. Although early is better, you can start wrting end of your junior year or summer between junior and senior year. At that time, you should have a much clearer idea on what to write. You never know what might happen.

Yes, I agree that new events will pop up when I'm older. I'm just keeping a little log of ideas and things I see.

Don't think about it again till summer before senior year.

Seriously.

^Agreed. Who knows, there may be some life-changing experiences, or less dramatically, just gradual shifts in perspective, that'll happen between now and senior year.

Amen. Plus, you'll change so much as a writer between sophomore and senior years. There's absolutely no point in thinking about it now.
