my school transcript does not contain class rank so how am i going to tell the university? is self-report on the application form acceptable without an official transcript? how do you guys do about it?

If your school doesn’t rank, you don’t report it. Either they give you a number or they don’t, it’s that simple.

If you are applying to any schools that require rank for some reason, say use it to determine if you will be automatically admitted, the HS should provide it on request. They might add it to transcript, or to GC report or send it out separately. In any case, there should be a policy about how to handle it. My kids’ HS’s do it, even says somewhere in the guidance materials that they provide it on request. If you happen to have 4.0 on a 4.0 scale, then it is easy for colleges to see that your rank is #1 so they may not need something sent. You’d have to ask. They might want to know how many you share with. It could even be that that info is in the school profile. Sometimes schools that don’t rank include a table of approximate GPA cutoffs for various %s of class. We never had to bother about it.

My daughter’s school did not rank, so she had nothing to report. It was not an issue anywhere, public or private.
