I have trouble remembering vocabulary and I know that you need to know a lot of vocabulary for the SAT CR and even the writing section. How do you study vocabulary efficiently and effectively? Is it possible to memorize over 3k SAT words completely if you are given a time of 1 1/2 years to study vocab? How many should I study per day, how often should I review them? For people who have done well on CR and Writing sections, what is your method of adding more vocab words to your longterm word bank??

have you ever heard of the ten touch rule?
like if you make a flashcard, it's one touch. use the word in writing, it's another.
use the word in speech... etc.
it works

Mnemonic devices.

So how many vocab words should I study per day/week? How often should I review those words?? Reviewing 3k words a day is excessive isn't it??

At least 10 words a day, and everyday, review your words from the past three-four days. 3k is definitely excessive..lol

Use them in real life. Don't be a poltroon -- those amicable to you may even be apathetic towards your novel vocabulary. Only if you introduce the words one at a time though.

fizix.. I only know the meaning of apathetic lol. =[ I have a lot of studying to do, and less than two years to do it!

If you're thinking about words as something you have to memorize, you won't remember them.

Well of course I want to memorize them, so that I could use them throughout my life. I want to learn new words so that I could use them to convey my thoughts and improve my writing/daily communications.

try using a lot of different methods. vocabulary websites, vocabulary building books, making your own flashcards, and whatever. it really helps when you see the same word popping up again and again.

some good websites:
number2.com
vocabtests.com
sheppardsoftware.com/webgamesvocab.htm

some good books:
barron's how to prepare for the sat has a good list. you might make flashcards from it.
gruber's new sat book also has a list, plus tests, so even better!
hot words for the sat has ten words each list, then a quiz
if you really want to spend a lot of time:
word smart genius edition
world wise 3000 books 6-9

Where can I purchase Barrons 3500 words?

"Where can I purchase Barrons 3500 words?"

Buy barron's SATI book, lol and you will get the words

Woah... Just what I was looking for! Thanks J. Shi! Btw, do you guys think it is essential to look up all the words you don't know when you read books?? See, I'm really behind on my vocabulary right now; like a few grades behind. Right now we are reading grade 10 books in our class and there are at least 5 words on every page that I don't know the meaning of. Should I look up all of those words?? Will this be of any help: looking up the definitions for a few seconds and continuing the book? Won't the definitions and words just go into one ear and out the other?

From your experiences, please give me your point of view on the procedure. Thanks!

Thanks for all the sources Marributt!! I'll be sure to check them out! =]

10-20 a day is good. 100 a week is in range, if you are a year away from takingi the SATs.

I'm not patient enough to start SAT Prep even a year ago! It seems to me rather like a lot of stress. Well, if u can handle that sort of prep then the only thing u should be doing right now is learn the voc completely and take up review/learn concepts of Math from School Textbooks. (To ace CR, u just have to be able to identify cunningly the meaning of the words thru context clues, roots, prefixes and suffixes.) There's no harm to learn the words to be able to use them throughout the rest of ur life; but I rather think memorizing words wouldn't do. U gotta be able to pick up some ten new words and use them as much as u can for a week or two and really seal 'em in ur mind. And then pick up a new set. ALways learn the synonyms and antonyms. Those r the most important part if u want to remember words for more than just taking the SAT. Last tip, if u maintain bunch of messengers, mail account, etc. use the new words as password and then change them after ten days! (It really works! Although, I realized that doing sth like this helps u only to remember the word, u'd always be forgetting to use that word in ur writing!)

Learn a new European language (Italian, french...and NO english doesn't count) and you'll be almost guaranteed to improve your vocabulary. For example you would've known the definition of amicable almost instantly because the word "ami" in french means 'friend' so you can deduce the meaning of the word.

Well I'm learning Spanish.. but there aren't as many words associate with it than as there are with Italian or French right? Well I think I need to memorize all of the roots suffixes prefixes etc. Where can I find these words and their definitions?? Thanks

"cracking the psat" has some pretty good roots and suffixes...thats the book i used but i think it was a little to short (not enough words). Spanish is close to italian (which is very close to latin) so don't worry; once you become good enough in spanish you will realize that the words are very similar. Just remember that in the SAT they rarely give you words that you can't deduce the meaning of using roots.
