how do you tackle long reading passages?

I have trouble with these because

first, I read this the whole passage
and not really understand what I'm reading
Then I read the questions
then I have to go back to the passage and look for my answer in the passage
so this wastes alot of time for me.

SO....Do you read the passage first or questions first? Or a paragraph, then a question, then another paragraph, then a nother question, etc..??

Based on the advice of the PR book for AP English Lit, I scan through the passage for about 30 seconds, not really reading, but absorbing. Then, I read the passage all the way through once. When I get to questions that refer back to the passage, I make sure to go back to the passage. Now while I am definitely more of a math student than an english student, I feel that this strategy helped me on Thursday's AP Eng Lit Exam.

i do it PrincetonReview style. read the first paragraph and last paragraph. hit up the questions and read five lines before the reference line, and five lines after the reference line. repeat for every question. return and finish the questions that summarize the whole passage. i end up having 10 minutes left to go back and check answers. i get like 90%+ on critical reading doing this. when i'm done with the test...i don't remember a lick about the passages at all because i just use them to find the answers...don't even bother understanding them. also before you test make sure you can identify literary terms (simile, metaphor, analogy, personification, litote, blah blah. google literary terms)

I'm a pretty quick reader, so I quickly read through the whole passage, then read the questions, and depending on necessity, I go back to the passage. Either that or sleep through the test... just kidding!
