how do you tell colleges about specific circumstances that affected your grades?

my grades near end of sophomore year and beginning of junior were not good because of extenuating circumstances.

where do you tell that to colleges in your app, or can you even?

or, is it not even worth it?

I actually don't really want to talk about it in an essay either. (about how I "overcame" it etc.)

Have your GC discuss it in their evaluation, things like this usually sound better coming from a 3rd party. If it’s not a reason that your GC thinks is valid, it is likely not worth mentioning on your application.

Definitely make sure that your counselor is aware of your circumstances and have them mention these in their recommendation. Good luck.

Depends on what it is. I had cancer so it had a tremendous effect on me. I wrote one essay about it and my GC included it in her letter (so I am told.) I agree with the other poster who said it sounds better coming from the GC. GOOD LUCK!!!

Most of my apps had an optional section where you could make note of things like this. Others are right though, a mention in a letter from a counselor is a good idea.
