How Do You Think I'll Do?

Hey, this is my frist post on these forums. I've been looking around at other posts, and this seems to be the best place to put this question.

Do you think that I have good chances of getting into Ivy/Similar Stature colleges and universities?

My GPA is 5.0/5.28 (in a VERY competitive school), Grades are all A's and A+ except for AP Psychology, AP Physics B, and French B H where I have B+'s. Of course, every class I take are all honors and AP. Unweighted, my GPA is about a 3.8-3.9/4.0. Below are my grades so far

I recently took the new SAT, and obviously don't know what I got, but I believe around 770 Math, 750 Writing, 720 Verbal, which equals a 2240. I've recieved a 720 on SAT II in Bio, and 740 in Math 1C.

For my EC's, I am an avid swimmer (have been since I was 6), and was a member of the All-County team. I will also be swimming in a tryout based, 1 week state competition (imagine mini olympics). I am also an instructor at my swim team's "learn-to-swim" program.

I am also a singer, and recieved all-county status in classical and vocal jazz disiplines. Before I submit my application, I will hopefully made it to the all-state level for both.

Obviously, I will be looking at some of the best schools. I'm just wondering what you think my chances are in actually getting in?

P.S. Although I am in a public school (regular, not magnet), my school is constantly top 5 in regards to the number of Intel semifinalilsts, and I will be submitting next year along with a select group of students. That can't hurt :-)

P.P.S I'm also an editor of the yearbook (in junior year).

This is a great day to go on the individual college biards are truly see what it took to get in this year.

I think you definitely have a heck of a lot going for you, kid. Excellent grades and gpa, add in a couple more leadership positions if you have them. SATs are excellent also, good job. Good luck with Intel.

Looks impressive & I suppose you have a chance for all, & a very very good chance at "lower" schools like Cornell, Northwestern, etc.

Thanks for the replys so far.

Do I have any honest chance of getting into HYP? I have a friend at each who said I could get in... but they were just being nice.

I've also been looking at Williams and Dartmouth, any chance for those?

Great grades and scores, however, elite colleges don't really give a crap if you're a yearbook editor. As far as Harvard Yale and Princeton, definitely go for it, but make sure when you apply you make your application as unique as possible, because they have seen too many kids like you.
For Williams and Dartmouth I think you're in...show a lot of interest!
Good luck, your future looks promising.

The way I look at it is take away the 1600 and 4.0 , AP's with 5's because everyone has close to that applying to those schools. I imagine they could fill up their school by taking just the validictorian from half the high schools in the U.S.

Now what do you bring to the table concerning EC's REC's essays etc... that are on the same caliber as a 1600 (old) SAT score?

i.e. being a junior olympic swimmer is a 1450 being an olympic swimmer is a 1600

If you look at the individual boards the competition is extraordinary and one person did ask the Yale admission why he was rejected and he said the scores were competitive, but the rest of the package couldn't compare to the caliber of competition.

In fact that would be a cool and valuable new thread to do:

Having the reccommendation say you're the best student he taught this year would be a 1450, having the reccomendation say you're the best student he ever taught is a 1600.

I think my swimming will be my strongest point. If Junior Olympics is 1450, and Olympics is 1600, i'm probably around a 1500. I'd be a strong B or C relay swimmer on a LOT of school teams.

Just on a side note, do you think colleges look for INCREDIBLE athletics and mediocre grades or a mix, good at sports and good grades? I'm interested to hear your opinions on that.

If you are recruited you are in anywhere. If not, it is still a valuable EC. You have a chance at HYP, but they won't be very good. The truth is they aren't for anyone. You just have to hope for the best, but def. apply.
