On the Common App, or any college app for that matter, how exactly should you fill out the extracurricular section?

For example, say you are the officer of a community service club, like Key Club or National Honor Society. Just putting down the club name and your position says virtually nothing, right? It looks really generic, and probably like you're just trying to "fluff up" your app.

In reality, many such positions require a lot of time and work to be put into them. What if you wanted to mention all the projects you were involved in, all the various things you helped initiate? How do you go about this? (I already want to use that short answer space for another EC--volunteering outside of school, but I still want to elaborate on my other ECs and not just slap them down.)

Do you attach a resume to your app or something? Anyone (who is already in college) possibly have a sample filled-out application they might be willing to share?

All three of my sons attached activities lists with their applications. Son #1 was heavily involved in music and applying to conservatory programs. He listed all of his major music awards, recital rep. and all of his music groups. Son #2 was involved in Scouts and had spend a great deal of time backpacking. He listed his different trips and scouting activities. Son #3 was very involved in music and drama. He listed all of his plays, musical activities and summer activities as well. All 3 were accepted to well regarded programs.

My one caveat on activity lists is to keep it to one page. Group you activities together in a way that makes sense to you. Within an activity group, list the activity, a brief discription of the purpose if it is not obvious, how you contributed and the lenght of time of your involvement. Start with those things you did most recently.

Example:

Community Service Activities:
Key Club - (Very Brief discription of goals of club) 2004-2008 President Sept. 2007- June 2008, Vice President Sept. 2006 - 2007. Spearheaded our school campaign to raise money for local food pantry. Raised over $xxxx

Girl Scouts - Sept. 1998 - June 2007 Gold Award

For my gold award project I organized an after school program for 25disadvantaged children in my neigborhood. This included raising funds, arranging space, getting other students to volunteer time to teach in the program.

Music Activities:
Band - Sept. 2004 - June 2008
Private flute lessons, Sept. 2000 - present
