How do your high school classes work?

I was wondering this because it seems that high schools have such different ways of doing things.

For my high school, it goes as the following.

Well, I'll just put the honors/ap tracks down for main subjects. Don't quote me on this, but I'm 99% positive that this is how it goes.

English:
9th- Accelerated English
10th- Accelerated English
11th- AP comp
12th -AP lit

Science:
9th- Accelerated Biology
10th- Accelerated Chemistry
11th-AP Physics
12th-AP Chem or AP Bio

Math:
three different accelerated tracks
1st one)
9th- Accelerated Algebra 2
10th- Accelerated Trig (1stsemester) Ap Calc AB (2nd semester)
11th- AP Calc BC
12th- AP Statistics

2nd)
9th- Accelerated geometry
10th- Accelerated Algebra 2
11th- Accelerated Trig (1stsemester) Ap Calc AB (2nd semester)
12th- AP Calc BC

3rd)
9th- Geometry
10th- Algebra 2
11th- Trig/pre-calc
12th- AP calc AB

Foreign Language: (I'm not positive on how the German courses work.)
- 2 tracks
9th Spanish 1/French 1/German 1
10th Spanish 2/French 2/German 2
11th Spanish 3/French 3/German 3
12th Spanish 4/French 4/German 4 OR AP Spanish/ AP French

9th Spanish 2/French 2/German 2
10th Spanish 3/French 3/German 3
11th Spanish 4/French 4/German 4
12th AP Spanish/ AP French

Social Studies: (All classes are electives)
9th- World History/ World Geography
10th- AP Euro/ AP Human Gegraphy
11th- AP U.S. History
12th- AP Mac-econ

At my high school, there are no "tracks" other than english and I guess math. You're just required to have enough credits in different subjects to graduate, which is 4 years of english, 3 years of math, 3 years of science, 3 years of social science, 2 years of a foreign language, and a year each of arts and practical arts. Then, you are allowed to choose your courses.

English though is offered in Honors and Regular in freshman and sophomore year, and regular, honors, and AP in junior and senior year. AP 3 and AP 4 are both combinations of composition and literature.

Math is offered from Algebra I to AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics. From Algebra I to Pre-Calculus, the classes are in concepts, regular, and honors. Calculus is offered as an introduction, AB, and BC; and AP Statistics is taken concurrently with Calculus or afterwards.

All freshman take either Biology or Biology Honors, but after that, there are several different "tracks" but more it's like, you get to choose your own classes. Some people choose to take a course that is an overview of physics and chemistry in sophomore year, and then take science electives to fulfill graduation requirements, while others take all 3 major science and their respective APs.

Social Science is more track-like as well. All freshman take either world history or world history honors. Sophomores take early american history, which is offered in regular, honors, and ap. Juniors and Seniors have a choice of electives, modern american history (regular, honors, and ap), AP economics, and AP european history.

Foreign Language is offered, with levels 1-4 and languages also taught in middle school have AP5, but none have honors designation. People who did well in middle school language continue with level 2 in freshman year.

And the rest is just the administration making us take electives.

im in an advanced studies program and this is how we go:

English-
9th: Honors English 9
10th: Honors English 10
11th: AP English Language and Composition or H American Literature/Composition
12th: AP English Literature and Composition

10th: Geometry or Algebra 2 or Math Analysis or AP Calculus AB
11th: Algebra 2 or Math Analysis or AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC
12th: Math Analysis or AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics

Science-
9th: Integrated/Coordinated Science
10th: Honors Chemistry or Honors Biology or AP Biology
11th: Honors Chemistry or Honors Biology or Honors Physics or AP Chemistry or AP Physics
12th: Honors Physics or Honors Chemistry or AP Chemistry or AP Physics

12th: AP Spanish Language or AP Spanish Literature or AP French Language or Korean 4 or none

my school is pretty small so doesnt have a lot of advanced to classes to choose from. ill put down the norm for bright, straight A students

english:
9th-english 1-2
1oth- english 3-4
11th- enlgish 5-6
12th- ap english language

math: (some ppl take geo in 8th grade)

9th- french/spanish/mandarin 2
10th- french/spanish/mandarin 3
11th- french/spanish/mandarin 4
12th- ap french/ap spanish/honors mandarin

anyways, thats just average. i, for example, take both french and spanish. i have 2 science classes, and next year i will have 3 sciences

My school is about 1000 people, it's a Catholic all-guys school.

English: You have two options every year, regular English or honors/AP. Juniors and seniors go either American Lit to British Lit or AP Comp to AP Lit.

Languages: Straight through the track. Language 1 to AP Language, with only Spanish having an AP Lit class.

Math: Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II or Honors Algebra II, PreCalc, Calc AB, Calc BC, Differential Equations. Pre-Alg to Alg II can be skipped if you pass the respective tests, and PreCalc can be skipped with an A in Honors Alg II.

Social Science: Accelerated is Speech, AP Euro, AP US, AP Econ and AP Gov't. Normal is Geography, World History, US History, Econ and Gov't.

Science: Honestly, the only set science class is Freshman Bio (Honors) or General Science. From there you're free to take any of the school's science classes. Some take all 3 APs (Chem, Bio, Physics), some take Health, Environmental Science, and Chem. It all depends.

And there are always exceptions to every rule.

At my school there are four tracks and some people take two tracks at once. It's awfully complicated, so I only know how my double-track works, and I don't even know how that works because I'm only kinda-sorta in it:

Math:
9th: Precalc
10th: Calc AB, some take AP Stats
11th: Calc II/III
12th: Differential Equations/Linear Algebra, some people take AP Stats

10th: AP Physics B + Chem Honors
11th: AP Physics C + IB science of your choice + A Joke Class
12th: HL IB Physics + uh, I dunno...something or other

Social Studies:
9th: World History
10th: US/Comparative Government (I think Comp Gov was eradicated and replaced with Economics or something...)
11th: IB American History + TOK
12th: Second year of IB American History + TOK

English:
English I -> English II -> AP English Literature/IB English III -> IB English IV

Foreign Language:
Spanish I -> Spanish II -> Spanish III -> Spanish V
or
Spanish II -> Spanish III -> Spanish IV -> Spanish V

Yeah, see, you really don't have much of a choice. Except for electives. And you can't take any four-year-electives because junior year IBers get no electives.

For honors kids at my school:

Math: Accelerated starts at 2-->Ap Calc, Math 1-->Precalc

Fizix, why do you lie so much? No school in the US has a math couse path like that. Even if it's private it's unrealistic. You are CURRENTLY A SENIOR...You said you did 2 APs Freshman year and 6 Sophmore YEAR. But in truth you've only done 8 APs in your 4 years of high school. I doubt you did what you did freshman and sophmore year. If you need proof, just say so.

no.....i go to the same skool as fizix and she probably just skipped physics and precalc and took AP physics and AP calc......some rly smart kids at our skool w/ really good backround in the subject can do that

and yes tht is the math track cuz i m on it 2

What are you talking about...? She said she did Pre-calculus freshman year...care to give me your school's website?

Then, that's horrible if it's considered the normal track at your school. You won't be ahead at all for colleges because it's NORMAL for your school so people that have geometry as their normal track are in equal standings. Unlike me, where I'll actually be looked on as ahead of the normal "track".

English:
9th: H English
10th: H English
11th: H English
12th: AP English

Math:
9th: H Geometry
10th: H Algebra II
11th: H Precalc
12th: AP Calc

History:
9th: H World History II
10th: H US History I
11th: AP USH or H US History II
12th: Any other class
If you have room in your schedule, you can take any of the following: AP Euro, AP Human Geo, 60's Culture (H), H Ancient History, and then a class where you study the role of women throughout history.

Science:
9th: H Bio
10th: H Chem/AP Envi Sci/H Envi Sci
11th: AP Bio/AP Chem/AP Envi Sci/H Envi/H Chem
12th: AP Bio/AP Chem/AP Envi Sci/H Envi/AP Physics

Language:
9th: H Language III
10th: H Language IV
11th: H Language V
12th: AP Language VI (it's either AP or CP)

Ooh, a bragging opportunity! I think I'll take it.

I'm flattered, though let's just say I have three years' worth of empirical evidence to disprove that statement.

Nah, actually I'm currently a junior. I'm just leaving high school early. Dropping out, if you will. And the track I listed here was for normal smart juniors in the highest possible track, not for class valedictorians with bizarre schedules who've already exhausted the math and science curriculum. And who like pie.

Hey, not every kid can get into Caltech. :D

It's actually the highest track of the four we have. Or to be more precise, it combines the two highest tracks into one super-track. I only posted it because I didn't care to dig up the other tracks about which I have very little knowledge. Sorry for not clarifying.

They compare you to OTHER students from your school so since this is common at your school, math won't count as much.

Trust me, graduating early isn't much, I know someone, who got 2400 SATs sophmore year, graduating Junior year and is going to Harvard. Also he's only been in the US for 4 years.

CIT, not the best.
Not every kid can get into a state univeristy.

I go to a Jr/Sr High school, so students can take alot of high school courses in middle school. We have a 7 period day, and the most accelerated track looks like this (I used Spanish as my example for a foreign language):

-Algebra 1 Hon.
-Spanish 1

8th grade:
-Geometry Hon.
-Algebra 2 Hon.
-Biology Hon.
-Spanish 2

For electives, we have AP Psychology, AP Studio Art, drama, team sports, life management, science research, tv production, computer graphics, etc., etc.

Well, it was mainly an effort to get out of having to take a year of boring classes and good-for-nothing electives. That's worth plenty to me. Next year I'd rather be taking quantum mechanics than yearbook. :D

Probably true. ::shrugs:: But it's sure helped me learn more math. Which is always awesome.

This is only for the honors track (or in my district, the "accelerated" students's path):

Science:
8th - Living Environment Regents

Mandatory Phys. Ed (or Movement if one is in Performing Arts) every year.

Our school allows students to start earning high school credit in the last year of middle school (8th).

Our district also offers Cosmotology (3 periods), Auto-Mechanics (3 periods), Performing Art (3 periods, and one of the best in the State of NY), and a variety of other electives (business, culinary, education, sociology, AP Comp Sci, etc.)., Most students also participate in either Banda, Chorus, or Orchestra.

We ahve a 9 period day.
