How does a school know where else the student applied?

Unless you tell them on the application, how do they know what other schools the student may be considering?

Curmudgeon said of his dd:

They also told me that she needed to apply to schools that would strike fear in heart of those merit schools she was applying to attend.

... and I understand why this would be true, but I don't understand how the college knows who the competition is.

I wonder if they can "see" where else you have sent the Common Application or perhaps the CSS Profile to, for instance. I don't know -- maybe somebody else knows.

Obviously, they know what you list as other schools you're applying to (but that assumes you've actually listed them all...).

If you are applying for financial aid, six the schools getting the report are listing per report. So if there is contact between the admissions and financial aid offices, the info is right there.
I was told that there is no collusion in the CA or the SAT scores, but that was years ago. Don't know if that is still the case.
Usually they know because they ask on the app, and kids will put down some but not all of their other schools, strategically giving out that info, which is what Curmudgeon is referring to.

My dd is hoping for merit aid at her top-choice school, but she's really not interested in attending any of the rivals that might "strike fear in the heart" of that school. I wonder whether this will hurt her chances for merit aid.

Transcripts at my school have a place where the GC lists every place it's sent.

Marth, if I were you I would complain to your hs. I don't understand why they would list all the colleges they send the transcript to on the transcript.

I can see how it would be a problem to some, but since I'm only applying to one school, I'll leave well enough alone.

Also, I'm kind of happy about it, because the only other thing on there is Governor's School.
