Question: Does CAL admit you -for non capped majors- by GPA against everyone applying in LS or does the admission decision come from each category of LS- social sciences etc... Or do they compare you against everyone in the specific major you are competing with, for example, anthropology. In less complicated terms do they judge your GPA and applicants by LS as a whole, by area, or just by each specific major? Would an anthropology student have a harder time than a philosophy student in getting accepted? I see the social sciences area only has a 20% admit rate, is that because there is a high influx of students with lower GPA's applying to those majors; or is just harder to get into the social sciences branch of LS?

From what I’ve heard, they have admission officers in separate subject areas, not individual majors and not ones for the entire college of L&S, who are responsible for reviewing your app. Other than that though, I’m not sure whether they admit you based on some predetermined criteria or compare you with other applicants in your subject area. My guess would be the former. There are also no “capped” or “impacted” majors in Berkeley L&S, it’s all so competitive that they claim not to have set quotas on how many students they admit to specific majors.

Here’s a link to Berkeley admissions page about how they select students. However, it does seem to discuss in depth the actual selection / evaluation process.

I was curious about this as well. From what I’ve read, they admit by L&S as a whole but I don’t believe that. From my own inference, I think it is split up by departments and they look at prereqs etc.

I’m having a hard time deciding what to apply for in L&S because of this.
