how does college calculate GPA?

I'm interested in NYU, and for a while, I was only considering UC schools. I know UC only uses sophomore and junior year grades, but what about schools like NYU? I'm sure they look at all 4 years, but the thing is I screwed up a but in my 9th grade year.

I heard they add all the points (4= A 3= B 2 = C and 1 extra if it's Honors or AP class) that a students takes all 4 years, divided by all the classes taken.

Any info about this?

If there is a formula, then colleges don’t share it. In practice colleges deal with great variations in how grades are reported, in distinguishing grades from schools that inflate grades from those that are more conservative in grading, from schools that weigh grades and those who don’t, from schools who have very limited course choices, to those with greater variety, etc.

Worrying about freshman grades is unproductive. It’s mostly junior and first term senior grades that get the greatest scrutiny. Sophomore grades matter, especially in that they show consistency and trends. Freshman grades can matter – depending on the subject, and on demonstrating trends.
