How does Harvard handle the outside scholarship?

Hi, does anyone know how does Harvard handle the outside scholarship? I know that Yale and Princeton allow the student use the outside scholarship to buy a laptop once in 4 years. Does Harvard have the same policy?

H wants the student to contribute $4000 (1250 for each semester and 1500 for the summer) from their own earnings toward their college expenses - the first $4000 of outside scholarships go to replace this expectation. The next $2500 of outside scholarship for the freshman year can be used to reimburse the student's expenses for a laptop, printer, cables service agreements, and necessary peripherals (but not iPods). After that, any addition OS merely reduces the amount of an already-awarded H scholarship (if any).

Thank you, gadad.

So do we purchase the laptop with our own money, and then Harvard will cut us a check back to reimburse us for it through scholarship monies? How does this work more specifically?

It's good to confirm with the Financial Aid office that you both have the same understanding that your student has $2500 extra in outside scholarships. You hen purchase the hardware and software and send in receipts for reimbursement. Two years ago when D1 did this, the reimbursement came in September.

is there a link where you found this information? i remember reading it somewhere as well, but i'm having trouble finding it (or is it in the financial aid package).

It's on p. 8 of the red and orange "Financial Aid and Student Employment" booklet that came with the aid award letter. I called the FA office to confirm the process after reading about it; I also have a daughter who's already at H, and I was trying to remember the process from when she got the computer reimbursement two years ago.

thanks gadad!

Might I also add... You only have to report scholarships and awards that were awarded to you to be used for Tuition and Fees. Other awards that are not specifically for Tuition and Fees do not have to be reported.

For example, I won $1000 for being an Intel STS Semifinalist, and on the letter they sent with the check, it is not specifically for Tuition and Fees. So I don't have to report it.

What makes you think you do not have to report this? You are required to report **all **outside scholarships - they do not have to specify they are for tuition and fees

An award holder is required to notify the Financial Aid Office of any substantial change in his or her financial resources for the year, such as receipt of additional outside scholarship assistance. The Committee reserves the right to review the award in the event of a change in the student's resources.

When I called the Financial Aid office they told me that I didn't have to report it. That's what makes me think that I don't have to. Unless the person from Harvard's financial aid office is incorrect.

Was there already a form sent out regarding how we should report out outside scholarships? Because to my understanding our term bill is due in August and our scholarships would affect the amount we pay.

I'd also like to know. Help please!

does anyone know?

My D got this e-mail from the FAO last week:

OARS: Once you are certain of any awards you'll be receiving, please visit the Outside Award Reporting System at Office of Financial Aid, Harvard College
and follow the instructions. You will need your Harvard University Identification Number (HUID) and corresponding Personal Identification Number (PIN) to log on to this application. For more information about the HUID and PIN, please visit Harvard University PIN Website.

The information you provide through OARS will result in anticipated credits on your fall semester term bill for outside awards that have not yet been paid to you or to Harvard, thus reducing the total amount due (you will receive your first term bill from the Student Receivables Office on or shortly after July 9). If you are receiving need-based scholarship assistance from Harvard, we will use your outside award information to update your financial aid package. If after completing the form you discover you will be receiving additional outside awards, please revisit the site and update your personal profile accordingly.

If you have any questions or technical difficulties with either of these two web sites, please contact FAS computer support at 617-495-7983. Questions regarding your PIN may be directed to the UIS
