How does it feel to be a minority?

Because race is important

“Because race is important”

It’s only as important as you want to make it.

I work in an environment with mainly Whites, Chinese and Indians. Race really isn’t an issue in the work environment. Your competence, drive, accomplishments and ability to work with others are far more important.

^ I’ll put it this way.

In America we all come from a different place, some come from European descent, Puerto rican, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Hungarian, Etc.

We live in a multi-racial setting and in ethnic groups.

Scholarships are made for certain groups, there are certain clubs u need to have the ethnicity,

Most colleges want a diverse setting, etc.

So race is important, and you’re right it as important as you want it to be.
If you want to really outshine your race u must be able to portray it as something of importance to you.

And that can truly work for ur benefit in many situations

“And that can truly work for ur benefit in many situations”

Don’t you want to know that your achievements are based on your abilities, talents and character as opposed to something determined by race? I usually don’t give a lot of thoughts to using race to get things as our race doesn’t get anything.

Oh you CAN

let me tell u that for example

u can mix the mup with your talents, abilities and character

As a minority myself, being an immigrant was HARD.
You’re put into remedial english just because your country speaks Spanish, people can be discriminating, it’s hard to succeed academically because of the placement u get on.

And socially, some kids can be mean to you just cause u have an accent, not saying everyone does, but some.

In the media, Immigration is a big issue in schools, how Illegals have bad college success ratings, how illegal immigrants are taking all our fund, etc.

Teachers can use that against someone who although is a legal immigrant, is an immigrant nontheless, it can get VERY discriminating sometimes.

However, these kind of diversities do BUILD UP CHARACTER, I completely agree.
I was able to overcome a bunch of diversities.
I got out of remedial English by scoring high on STAR tests, I was able to fit in well in the American society because I learned english proficiently.
I was able to overcome educational barriers by studying on my own.

On one ocassion I was DENIED to be in an AP English Class (both of them actually) by the chairman of the department, she told me “You don’t need the class, it’s only for people who are proficient in English” and that “My major/future has nothing to do with it” ( Spanish Major/ Public Health)
I was like “*** man?”

And u know what happened?
I took the AP Test anyways and EXCELLED on it.

So my point here is, sometimes, RACE can cause adversities for the individuals who have the URM status.

it can teach us to develop talents, character and abilities.

And so, when I wrote my personal statement, yes I mentioned “I’m a mexican immigrant” but NOT only that

I related it to my life, to my aspirations and made it into a well rounded essay.
