How does NHS work at your school?

I was just wondering since I see many students here with medium stats getting into NHS and then saying they are in the the club for 2+ years. This is not like my school however. When I checked the NHS website, is basically says that you need a 3.0 or above to get in. Since I was just accepted into NHS today, I'm asking people to post how NHS works in their school.

After 5 semesters of school (Feb of Junior year) you will receive a letter asking you to apply for NHS (if you have a 4.0 weighted GPA or above). Then you must get 16 teachers ratings and 5 (max) coach/sponsors to rate you in your ECs. After all this they accept students based solely on points gotten from teachers, coaches/sponsors, and GPA. You then have to complete 10 hours or community service before years end and an additional 50 hours Senior year. This doesn't include 12 hours of tutoring. So that's how it works at my school (therefore students can't be in it longer than 1.5 years). Just curios.

First to get in our school requires a 3.2 iirc. Well we meet every month and talk about projects and NHS. The members are required to volunteer also for ‘x’ amount of hours so they try and give as many opportunities as possible. Mostly members go and chill during meetings, eat food… lol.

Does having NHS as something to put on your resume make a big difference?

Not a big difference imo, but I think it helps a little to show you have extracurricular activities.

^ exactly and that your well liked by your teachers…

Also I have a question related to NHS. Should I send thank you emails or something more to the teachers that rated me (20 since I doubled up on a teacher and sponsor)? I would have a lot of them to do so I was just thinking of a simple update thanks email (of course not a mass email).

In my school, for NHS, not only do you have to maintain certain grades and get approved by teachers, but you gotta be recommended by 6 teachers who supervised you in an activity where you demonstrated leadership/commitment. I didn’t have 6 so I did not join, and I feel kind of sad because I really wanted to join and put it on my resume.

@mash, trust me I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, especially if you were just a member and didn’t hold an position (prez, vice prez, ect.). Don’t lose sleep over it :)

Not a deal breaker.
