I have a 3.4 GPA, and I want to know if I should even bother applying to NYU for Acting. Do they focus more on the audition, the grades, or both?
It is an even split between academic and audition. They are evaluated separately, and you have to pass both to be admitted
@LittleLioness as mentioned above it is a 50/50 split. My son is a little below a 3.4 with one glaring bad grade in one class. He did not submit test scores. He was placed on the NYU wait list. He felt is audition and interview were very strong. I was surprised he made it to the wait list based on the number of applicants etc. I would caution you to do all you can to boost your GPA. There is a notion that grades are not as important at some of these elite BFA programs and that may have been true at one time, but with the ever increasing rise in BFA applicants, the GPA is important! Our coach has really stressed this and felt that my son was on the low side. It is worth mentioning that all of the programs he applied to with a mid-range GPA average, he was accepted to with merit and talent scholarships. With the exception of the wait list at NYU , he has not been accepted to any schools that have a higher GPA average regardless of how the program felt about his audition. Best of luck!!
