I know Big 10 schools have a great engineering reputation.
Solid Top 20 overall
It’s fine. It’s more than fine. Seriously, each state has a vested interest in having at least a couple of univs with strong eng’g. The state of Calif alone has over 25 schools with strong eng’g.
If you care about rankings, US News ranks tOSU engineering #28 among all national universities and #16 among all “public” national universities.
Its a great program.
The best engineering program in Ohio and top 20 nationally
If you are interested in applying to BIG 10 schools the US News national (not regional) engineering rankings are:
U-Mich & UIUC tied for 6
Purdue 9
Northwestern 13
UW-Madison 14
Penn State 18
Maryland and UMTC tied for 24
OSU 28
Also, rankings for higher paying job post graduation, I did not see OSU listed. All other BIG 10 listed including Michigan State and Iowa. Maybe something to consider in your college searches. Also gives you something to look forward to during your 4 years of college.
I personally find rankings for “Undergraduate Engineering” by themselves misleading versus specific discipline rankings for electrical, mechanical, etc. If you look at each list by discipline, you’ll see more detail. I would certainly consider graduate school rankings as well as it points at research and that typically attracts professors and facilities that have benefits to undergraduates.
Remember that these rankings come from “college peers” and at best seen as a rough guide. There are many rankings out there and each one justifies itself in its own way. In that, there is certainly little difference in giving a boost to a #20 versus #30 program as there would be, say for a #5 versus #95 ranking. In essense, what I read is that all Big 10 schools have great programs as they are all in the top 30 - some may be a bit better than others in certain niche areas of engineering (for instance, Ohio State has a Welding Engineering program that is not offered and other Big 10 schools), and some not. But realize at best you may be “splitting hairs”.
I would say that every Big 10 school is worth it when it comes to engineering. It gets down to a lot of specifics - so apply to the ones you wans and go to the one that you end up ranking #1 - not the one that is ranked by others.
Prestige doesn’t matter much for engineering. Anything in the top 100 is great. Ohio is easily far up into the top half of this – a very good choice (a no-brainer for anyone in-state).
