How does the university choose who runs the tours?
And, has anyone ever been a tour guide? Do you get paid? Is it fun?

At my school, they put up signs all around campus and wrote in chalk on the ground to sign up to be a tour guide. I didn't sign up because I was signed up to be an orientation adviser for the summer so I didn't want to have to take two classes on the school. It seems like it could be fun. And I think Images (our tour guides) get paid.

My school had signs and advertisements in the newspaper. I don't know how they chose, but they gave preference to work-study students and those who could do tours during spring/summer break. I haven't been a tour guide, but it seems like a really great job, and the pay is pretty good too.

Here, they are our admissions interns, so they get a ~$3000/yr stipend and do on-campus tours as well as go to high schools around southern California and recruit.

ours don't get paid (i think, could be wrong). they fill out an app, do a couple rounds of interviews, and get selected. i think they have to give atleast one tour a week and preference is given to those available over school breaks. i'm applying to do it next year. they have to memorize tons of facts about the school and admissions policies and typical questions that would be asked on a tour and have to pass a test with atleast an 85% i believe.

At my school it depended a lot about what types of events you were a tour guide for.

If you helped out during the HS Senior Visit days, then it was a volunteer position. I found out through friends in the Admissions Office, and basically was required to follow around a more experienced tour guide one time.

If you wanted to give tours to single students and their families like on a Tuesday, then you actually had to work in the Office of Admissions and were on staff. Giving tours was only part of the job. Getting this required a job interview.

If you wanted to be a summer orientation leader and give tours in that realm, then you had to go through a full application process, a regular interview, and then a very unique group interview set up before being selected. Once selected, you literally took a class for credit that was all about the university, from history, to what classes and resources were available, to which offices to direct questions to, and so on. The selected leaders also had to put together programming for the students and parents that they would perform during the orientation days. That was a huge deal and took the whole summer.

Your best bet is to contact the Office of Admissions on your campus and ask them.

I found being a tour guide on HS senior visit days to be a lot of fun, but it was dependent on the group following me. Some were really awesome, really excited about the school, and asked great questions. Others I think were out to get me - I seriously think that one mom was trying to get me to run into things while I was walking backwards....

Can you be one as a freshman?

Usually not...

A lot of universities let freshmen be ambassadors or hosts to preview students--that would be your best bet for getting involved with incoming students, although if you are a freshmen this yr, it is probably far too late to get involved in that way.

Maryland allows freshman to become tour guides.

Im still a senior in HS, but I think that this seems like the best job! I love talking...and I love my future school...so why not right?

my school allows Freshmen, and doesn't take 2nd semester seniors. They are not paid. No perks. They take about 20% of the applicants each year, it's pretty competitive. They put up flyers around campus when they are going to be holding the group interviews (this first round of the selection process).

^^ where do you go to school?

Freshmen at my school can be tour guides...but start second semester since apps are due in the fall

At my school you just sign up and go to a couple of training sessions. It's not a paid position, and I know several freshmen who are doing it this term (second trimester.)
