I've heard tour guides and RA's are two of the most competitive jobs on campus, so just wanted to see how competitive it is at your school for these jobs....

Well they call the people who do tour guides here “Ambassadors”, and it’s extremely competitive. You have to apply and if they decide you’re a possible candidate, there’s three rounds of interviews you have to go through. They only want the best.

At my daughter’s school she was one of 140 students competing for 10 tour guide positions. There were multiple steps and each each step more were weeded out, including her and her friend. The 10 selected have to be a diverse group of students that represent different types of majors and activities…

Ours are a part of the AmbassaDores (ba-dum-tish) program, and while run by the Office of Admissions, it is not a job but rather just another organization to join. That isn’t to say it’s not competitive-- there’s a lot of perks to being a tour guide besides monetary compensation.

Extremely competitive.

Not very competitive because no one has any idea where on earth the applications are since all the links to it are dead.

It’s difficult to land either position at my school.

Out of curiosity, why is it so sought after?

I don’t have the numbers, but I doubt that either is terribly competitive here. Since all campus jobs pay the same hourly rate, students usually prefer jobs that let them accumulate a lot of hours or do their homework on the job. Library jobs might be the most competitive on campus. (The science library got ~40 applications for 4 open positions last year.)

Hey, thanks for all the info and insights!

Super easy at my school for tour guides!

I was invited to be a tour guide within the first 2 weeks or so of my freshman year. I started giving tours by the middle of the semester at admissions events, and second semester I was a paid tour guide that had regular weekly tours.

RA positions are really hard to get though.
