I'm just curious, what's the process involved in becoming a resident adviser or resident assistant?

It depends on your school. You should talk to your RA or the housing department about it.

At least at UW, RA-hopefuls take a course in the Spring (to RA for the next school year) and are slowly weeded out in the process based on performance compared to other students.

You should check on your school’s website to see what the process is for becoming an RA.

At my D’s school, students who want to be RA’s have to fill out an application by a certain date. References and recs are required and I believe a certain GPA is as well. In the early part of the spring semester, interviews, both individual and group, are held. Then there is a second round, after cuts, at which students are asked to respond to hypothetical situations and engage in other RA type activity. I think that there is then another individual interview for people who made it through round 2. When my D applied, 27 RA’s were selected out of 132 applicants. The RA’s attend group training during the late spring semester and come back to school a week early to train and get the dorms ready in both semesters. They also have to stay until the dorms empty at winter and spring break and at the end of the year. My D said they take turns on the staffing. For instance, she is leaving this Tuesday for Thanksgiving even though the dorms are open until Wed but she will be staying until the dorms close for the winter break so another RA can leave earlier.

Hope this is helpful.
