How does one found an accredited university?

Just curious; it's something I've always wanted to do. I'm well aware of the basic requirements (being filthy rich), and I'm also aware that it's a one in a million shot that I'll actually get to do this, but I wouldn't mind planning ahead. As a current college student, what could/should I be doing?

Also, do you guys think there's any more room in the US higher education system for another university? The closing of Antioch College leads me to think no, but the often-discussed squeeze at the upper tier universities makes me think yes.

If you want to tell me I'm crazy for thinking I can do this, let me just clarify: I agree. But that's never stopped me before!

I don't know, but you could google Olin and see what you find. I know that when they opened they weren't yet accredited by ABET, but I'm pretty sure they are now.

Olin is accredited by ABET, and New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

A university cannot be accredited on the day it first opens its doors to students. Accreditation usually cannot happen until after the school graduates at least one class. That's when Olin received NEASC accreditation. ABET came a few months later, I believe. By May '07 they had both.

The Olin Foundation rolled 400 million dollars over to the school. I think that's after the start-up expenses.

So. . .start saving up!

Begin with money, lots of it.

Unless it has happened very recently, I think UC Merced is still not accredited just to give an idea of the length of time you go w/o accreditition even when you are a memeber of one of the best University systems in the World

Antioch College may be closed, but it's faculty, staff, students and alumni are setting out to do exactly what you characterize as a "one in a million shot." Nobody here in Yellow Springs would call you crazy for thinking its possible to build a college from the ground up today and to do something brave, experimental and different in the process.

Our website just went online at:
Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute, Yellow Springs, OH 45387
and, though we don't yet have accreditation, we're looking for exactly the kind of motivated, nay passionate, person that you seem to be. Check back as we get going building an institution from scratch by offering classes this fall, and maybe even consider joining us in this grand project.

To answer your question though: what you need are bright, committed, resilient people who believe in a common goal and want to work cooperatively to achieve it.
