How easy is it to switch majors out of architecture?

Hey guys, if I got admitted to CMU for Architecture, how easy is it to swtich into Tepper or Dietrich?

What if I don’t want Architecture can I not change?

I graduated a long time ago, but I made the switch from Architecture to Civil Engineering after my sophomore year. I had to take a couple classes the summer before my junior year in order to get caught up on the math and science core requirements but was able to graduate after 4.5 years total (which is a semester ahead of where I would have been if I had stayed in Architecture.

I would contact the Architecture Department and ask them where their students typically transfer to. I suspect that transferring to Dietrich or Tepper would be pretty easy. If the Architecture program is anything like it was when I was there, you’ll see a significant number of students drop from the program after the first two years.

how long ago did you graduate and thanks for the answer

December '92.

Carnegie Mellon is pretty strict nowadays about transferring between programs before you even enroll. they are on to the game of students applying to programs with higher acceptance rates just to get in.

@shortnuke Why did you switch out of architecture? Why do you think that the other students switched out?

I didn’t have the artistic aptitude. Architecture is very much a fine art, and I did much better in the technical aspects (materials, structural engineering, etc) than I did in the creative and visual aspects.

My son’s roomate is currently switching from Architechture to the BXA/BCSA program and he is currently a sophomore at CMU. Many of his Architecture classes are counting towards his art credits. I think its always possible to change at CMU…just not always easy. I think you have to apply and get put in the pool with incoming admissions, but I’m not completely sure. (Or, at least they tell the students that!) I do know they’ve talked about expanding Tepper to admit more students, so maybe that will be a positive for switching. My son’s in Tepper, btw, and loves it!
