I am an incoming freshman who really wants to rush and eventually pledge, but doesn't want to smoke in the process. Consuming alcohol in excess is not a problem for me. So to reiterate my question, is smoking essential to being involved in greek life at michigan, particularly in the top tier fraternities?

yes for top tier fraternities, i know theta chi makes their pledges smoke cigs…

If you are an incoming freshman, consuming alcohol in excess SHOULD be a problem for you. Alcohol poisoning is real and students have died from it. If you have to consume a foreign substance to become part of a fraternity (whether a cigarette, liquor, or mysterious cocktail), you shouldn’t do it.

Consuming excess alcohol can be just as bad as smoking.

I agree with @AnnieBeats

You don’t have to do Greek life in order to have a good time at Michigan. Less than 20% of students take part in it anyway.

I think the question is being misunderstood. I drink a lot in high school and plan to in college. I’m wondering if part of pledging is smoking at UM. Nothing more
