how exactly does the quarter system work?

I am applying for transfer to UCLA from a college with a semester system. I am curious as to the differences between the two. I know that there are 3 quarters in one school year. How many classes do you take each quarter? Is it more rigorous, from other people's experiences?

Well, the typical quarter courseload is around 3-4 classes. A quarter definitely flies by quickly so you have to make sure you're ready from day one. You can have a midterm, for example, by the third week already. The quarter system does allow you to take more classes as well as different classes throughout the year. Also, if you happen to screw up one quarter (which happens to many :D), it won't be too detrimental compared to one semester.
