How expensive is insurance for study abroad?

My daughter will be in the Galapagos Islands for a study abroad program in the spring. She just applied for a study abroad scholarship that has this requirement:

"if you are selected as a scholarship recipient, you must furnish evidence of international insurance coverage, to include health, accident, emergency evacuation and repatriation insurance."

Does anyone know how expensive this type of insurance is? Where does one purchase it? We have a zero EC and this scares me that we will not be able to afford it. Her merit scholarship and other financial aid will cover the other costs but I did not think about insurance.

(I already posted this in the study abroad forum, but the people who post here are so knowledgeable and helpful I thought it was worth posting here as well.)

Not very expensive. Here’s a link to the one we bought. $32 monthly for basic plan or $44 monthly for more deluxe.[Study Abroad Pricing](http://www.cmi-insurance.com/travel-medical-insurance/view-all-plans/study-abroad/pricing.aspx)

Thanks! That is not bad at all. I looked at the link you posted and I feel much better now.

That was the same company we used for our kids.

I spent a lot of time going over this before D went to Africa for the summer. You might want to consider if the policy provides for repatriation in the event of political unrest or natural disaster. Some did, other’s didn’t, and some that did provided for a trivial amount that would not have actually covered reasonable costs. We also chose one that had a very liberal medical evacuation clause – I figured if D really got ill or injured that we wanted her to be able to recover at home, not someplace on another continent. We found
insuremytrip.com to have good comparison capabilities.
