I don’t really know how my school does these things, but it’s not just grade based. But the people with the best grades also have the best everything else, so I’m supposing there won’t be much competition. Unless there’s a surprise, everyone pretty much knows who it’ll be.

My school basically just calls everyone who gets over a 4.0 weighted GPA a valedictorian. That’s good for me since I’ll probably be ranked somewhere between 8 and 5. There usually ends up being about 20 or so “valedictorians” and the true number one ranked person doesn’t get any special recognition.

@Helljumper: Who makes the Valedictorian speech at graduation? o_O

^ No idea. I don’t know if any student even gives a speech.

My school is not very competitive. I’m tied with two of my close friends right now for #1. The three of us have a 4.0 and we don’t weight classes, so all we have to do is keep getting A’s for one more year. There are few more people with one or two A- or B+, who would like to be valedictorian as well. We do get a little competitive, but it’s only talk. We’re all friends, so know one would ever hurt anyone else’s chances to further themselves. Truthfully, the 3 of us at the top are hoping that we can all be valedictorian so that we can give a speech together because we’re all pretty shy.

bumppppppppppppp

Well at my school It’s super close…I’m the current sal and I’m only .01 of a point away from val…so I’m pushing hard to get there. The rest of the top 5 is pretty close too so they are pretty competitive for sal or val. But the rest of the top 10 isn’t close at all to the top 5 so our top five is pretty set.

With '10 the top two are locked in but the rest of the positions could easily change.

With '09 there was this foreign exchange student that had all 100’s and 99’s and so if he had factored in to the class rankings (as the val was concerned he would) then he would have made the val become the sal and she would have been super mad.

With '08 there was no competition for val or sal…

I just realized for the past 3 years and most probably my year too our val has always been a girl…hmm interesting.

Three people are tied for val right now at my school… so you could say the competition is pretty fierce.

freshman year was REALLY tight, but then the other people in the top 3 started slacking off and now it’s pretty much me at 1st, and I don’t even know who’s behind me at this point, except for who’s in the top 5 & 10 percent.

My school doesn’t rank, wahahaha. I prefer it this way. Much less cutthroat competitive. The only time rankings come into play is during graduation when they announce the senior val/sal. But other than that, nothing.

At my school it’s so close.

The top 20 or so students in each grade are literally within .000001 of each other’s GPAs
Then again, the average class size is 700 students, and we offer almost every AP available so that really boosts the weighted GPA.

Damn fierce. I’d say at least 10 people with perfect As and tons of weighted classes in each grade. There’s no valedictorian title at our school, but people still compete for the number one class rank spot. It’s getting pretty dumb, as people just try and get perfect 5.0 weighted grades and dont actually care about the courses they take.

We had 15 people tied for Val with perfect GPAs in all AP classes.

Not that fierce, my school does not rank.

But, with that being said, everyone knows who the Val is going to be, but Sal is kind of up for grabs. But I honestly don’t think anyone cares. I sure as hell don’t but I got a B in math freshman year, so I blew it back then. But it’s not like I would have had a chance, lol.

My school doesnt rank either, we just have a val/sal.
the top ten kids know who they are though about halfway through senior year

My school doesn’t rank, and there is very little attention paid to who is the top student. I’m going into senior year in a few days and have NO idea who in my grade could be val or sal, I can’t even name the top ten. To be honest I don’t even know if we name a valedictorian at graduation, haha, and if we do there’s very little attention paid to it.

My school has about 700 Seniors and is approximately 70% Asian (the percentage is even higher among Seniors only)… so you can probably get an idea of the competition.

my school is far too competitive.
even people w/ straight a’s in honors + ap classes could have their rank in the 20’s.
blechh,
